I treat various disorders, but the majority of my clients suffer from depression or anxiety.
Choosing to get help is a sometimes difficult and courageous decision, especially in these difficult times. As of March 2020, I have begun doing telehealth. I will try to help you to feel as comfortable as possible from our first contact. I know that the biggest compliment I can receive is to be told how “real” clients find me to be, and how understood they feel. I have been in practice in Redlands for more than 25 years, and I utilize various techniques, tailoring my interventions to meet the client’s needs. I believe that it is the relationship between the client and therapist that has the most to do with growth.

Hello, I'm Denise Montano and I specialize in helping individuals who are dealing with depression and anxiety. These conditions can often stem from our surroundings, family dynamics, stressors, and more, but they do not define who we are. I see therapy as a journey where I not only provide tools but also listen, empathize, and offer support to lighten the load. I enjoy working with teenagers and young adults during these formative years, where the foundation for their future selves is pivotal. For mid to older adults, I provide space for them to unpack the weight they've been carrying, offering relief and fostering personal growth.

Hi, my name is Chris Offor. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who is passionate about supporting my clients through challenges to experience healing and growth in their lives. Everybody’s unique. We might all be dealing with the same things in different ways, but we are all able to seek help and address what we see to be bothering us. I use a cognitive behavioral approach to treat a variety of mental health issues ranging from depression, anxiety, and chemical dependency.
I believe in a Life Balance perspective to helping individuals and family. I find that we tend to get stuck in certain ways of thinking and behaving which causes a cycle of dysfunction that is difficult to see and overcome. By developing insight and new skills, we have the ability to realign our lives into a more healthy Life Balance which will allow us to deal with life stress and problems by using a variety of resources at our disposal.

I have successfully treated various issues such as depression, anxiety, women’s issues, trauma, adoption issues, as well as parenting and relationship problems.
Do you self-sabotage? You work very hard to get ahead, strive for success and accomplish goals that you desire. Meanwhile, another part of you criticizes, punishes and demeans everything you’re working hard for. Is it a constant battle between what you want to accomplish, how you want your life to be and that harsh critical voice inside your head? That voice is a big part of your depression, anxiety and addiction. You are not alone and you are not hopeless and doomed to repeat this cycle over and over. I understand that voice and I want to help you find freedom from it.

Using trauma based interventions and a relational approach, I treat childhood and adult trauma, depression, anxiety, attachment and relational issues.
What your mind and body says about you can explain so much! As women we carry the stress of family, work, school, and trauma in our bodies. This impacts the way we feel about ourselves and the world around us. At times in our life stress grows and so does the strain on our overall wellness. This process of stress and pressure can cause us to long for relief from the cycle of stress, pain, psychological turmoil, and relational distress (think: aging parents, children of all ages, and partners).

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
