The decision to engage a therapist is deeply personal and may seem challenging. It is a unique relationship, where ideally, you can be in a safe, empathic environment and talk to someone with in depth psychological training and significant life experience. I offer both to my clients, treating individuals, couples, children, adolescents and families. These relationships have led me to focus on the treatment of: anxiety, depression, relational communications, work place stressors, substance use/abuse, attachment disorders, emotional regulation issues, self image, family systems, ADHD, grief and loss, parenting, obsessive/compulsive behaviors, impulse control, mood disorders and relational conflicts.

Are you feeling anxious or depressed? Are you worried about a loved one? Are you in recovery (or want to be) from trauma, neglect or "coping mechanisms" like substance use and acting out? I understand that we generally do the best we can, which sometimes is not as great as other times. Therapy with someone you trust is a powerful tool for creating emotional health. It is possible to learn new ways of getting relief and finding a sense of well-being. Asking for help takes courage. Change is possible. I will walk this journey with you, at your pace. I will help you get your needs met and make the changes you want.

Throughout my life, I have noticed that I draw people to me that have struggled with a history of having instability in their childhoods. What this has looked like is individuals who have had rough childhoods and are now trying to create a better future for themselves and their children. This can be very challenging when you're building a new life and are still carrying the hurt and pain from not feeling cared for or heard as a child. The goal for these individuals is thriving in their lives by having healthy coping skills and healthy relationships.

I understand how hard it can be to even begin to reach out to a friend, family member, or a professional and acknowledge that now is the time to ask for help as I have been on the other side myself. I hope to hold an encouraging and safe environment for all peoples, and walk side-by-side processing life experiences.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
