You’re smart and successful but you can’t figure this one out. Things look okay on the outside, but on the inside, you feel anxious and confused. You’re already fighting with yourself and the repetitive arguments with your partner or others just add fuel to the fire. The de mands of work keep you busy, but you’re unsatisfied and aren’t getting much of what you want. The critical voice in your head telling you that you're not good enough is always present. You’ve tried to change without much success. You’re stuck and don’t know where to start.

Are you entering a new stage of life, or thinking of making a major change in your life? Are you unclear about the choices available to you? Are you feeling anxious and stressed out about the changes? Marriage, relationship challenges, divorce, graduation, career change, children leaving home, being a caregiver to parents, retirement, death of a spouse, as well as your own aging are all changes that increase stress and can be anxiety producing. It's much easier going through changes when you have an objective professional who can be your ally, trusted advisor, and guide through the process.

It's not always easy for us to admit that we want help. As much as we like to think that we can do it all ourselves, everyone needs and deserves to have someone in their corner. No matter the disappointment or the distress, the grief or the frustration, the longing for stability and solace is an innate drive that has lead you to seek support.

Reaching out to a therapist isn’t easy. It can be especially difficult for those who have tried therapy and been disappointed. Perhaps the therapy process felt too passive, and you felt unsupported. Or maybe you didn’t “click” with your therapist, and you left feeling misunderstood. Trying again after an unfulfilling experience takes tremendous courage. If any of this resonates with you, I’d love to help. Together, we can reflect on what has worked and not worked for you, and collaborate to make our work together helpful.

William K Marek. California psychologist number 14791. I primarily use a cognitive behavioral approach. My focus area of practice is helping clients improve! I listen a lot and then help people help themselves. I am directive and responsive. There is the problem and there’s how you think about the problem. For most folks, the latter is the bigger problem. That’s the bad news… and the good news! Change does not have to take a long time. I’m comfortable with all kinds of clients. I’m good at helping people find purpose and meaning in their lives. My sessions are calm, collegial, interactive, respectful, directive and helpful.

Nothing feels right. Your body, your relationships, your job--they all feel so heavy, so frustrating, and out of your control . You wake up stressed before you even get out of bed. Sometimes you respond with anger, sometimes panic, sometimes you simply withdraw. Maybe you've imagined the way things are supposed to be, and wonder what you're doing wrong, or maybe you feel like circumstances, or other people are blocking you from your ideal life. Or perhaps you are so stressed that you can't even imagine a better life because it seems so unrealistic. What's the point?

My client-centered approach to therapy places my clients at the forefront of their own healing journey as I guide and support each one of them. I believe that individuals are the experts of their lives and that my role is to provide a safe and nurturing space for growth. My goal is to assist in identifying strengths and inherent characteristics to fuel resiliency in each client. Clients are coached to understand that decisions made, relationships entered into, and responses to triggers are integral in the healing process by recognizing that trauma in its many forms impacts engagement in repetitive and/or negative behaviors.

When considering my patients, I take a holistic approach and assess from a bio/psycho/social/spiritual point-of-view. I believe assessing the whole patient is the best way to understand underlying problems/symptoms related to psychopathology. Most importantly, empathy, trust, a therapeutic alliance and rapport is of utmost concern; I want your therapy hour to be useful, beneficial, and enjoyable.

I help men and couples get unstuck in their relationships. As a man you may be struggling to feel and communicate your emotions, while simultaneously living with a great deal of stress. You may avoid conflict in order to not rock the boat. Self-doubt and an inner critic keep you feeling like you don't know where you're going (personally and professionally) and like you're never enough, leading to burnout. You want to feel confident, connected, have clear purpose, and to relish that thing they call joy. If you're a couple, we will work towards similar feelings of secure functioning. I want you two to feel safe, light, and powerful.

I primarily work with people going through big life transitions or decisions that can have lasting impacts on life. Many difficulties stem from relationships, whether that be with others or the one we have with ourselves. My work with individuals, couples, and families is direct yet warm, empathetic, and understanding as we navigate together how to process the blocks that can obstruct your view and ability to move forward. My clients can expect to explore life events from the past as patterns of behavior emerge in the here-and-now. As this self-awareness begins to develop, clients can often lead more joyful and connected lives.

As a bi-racial man, I understand the unique experience of what it means to live in two worlds.
Sometimes it’s a lack of belief in ourselves, or our childhood wounds getting the better of us. Sometimes it’s the stories that we tell ourselves about who we are and what we deserve. More often than not, what holds us back is a fear of change, of the unknown, and of asking for help. My therapeutic approach is rooted in the belief that genuine hu man connection, empathy, and a little bit of laughter have the potential to transform any situation. I work side-by-side with my clients to build trusting and collaborative relationships. Think of me as your team-mate, cheering you on, and guiding you to uncover what holds you back.

After almost 30 years in the therapeutic world, I have worked with many different clients to alleviate the pain and suffering life has caused them.
My name is Darrin Erb, MSC/LMFT-S, but I go by Darrin. I am a therapist, a college professor, an executive director, a SPED/Educational Specialist certified in ASD, and a pastor, but my greatest titles are that of husband and father. In the world of therapy, there are therapists like doctors and those who are more like surgeons. I am a therapeutic surgeon, meaning that we will go straight toward the dysfunction and replace it with something that works for you.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
