The decision to find a therapist for your child or adolescent is fraught with anxiety. Parents are taking a risk in choosing to share their children and their vulnerabilities with me. In my work I have the utmost respect for this decision and appreciate how challenging it is. So often you worry about what you did wrong or feel powerless to help. You may feel like you've tried everything or that you've failed. You may blame yourself or feel like you are failing your child in some way, or like you just need someone who can help.

Life is hard. We all find times in our lives when it just feels like too much. Expectations and pressures weighing on us; fears and self-doubt keeping us immobilized; uncertainty about the future and regrets from the past making it difficult to enjoy anything in the here and now. Therapy isn’t just about looking at childhood experiences and discovering “why” we do what we do. It’s also about how to move forward: what do we unpack, unload, discard, or take with us? I can’t make life easy for you, but I can help guide you and walk with you in support of your journey to figure out how to lighten the load.

You love your child unconditionally, and as a parent, you're willing to do anything to support them. However, at this moment, you might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, and uncertain about how to help. Perhaps your child is facing challenges in forming friendships, struggling with their temper, or lacking focus and motivation. In such situations, it's natural to feel helpless, but there is hope.

There are a vast number of reasons people seek out therapy: maybe you've been told, "It'll be good for you," maybe you've been feeling lost or stuck, or maybe you and your partner have been hitting the same wall over and over again and you don't know why. Whatever it is you are struggling with, you don't have to go through it alone. I'm here to provide the open space for you to be your most authentic self and to uncover whatever it may be that keeps you from believing you are capable and valuable enough to live the best version of your own life.

Hey there. Are you here because life's just been really tough on you? Maybe you're feeling frustrated because you're trying so hard to keep it together and it still feels like it's falling apart. You want to make changes and make yourself feel better, but it doesn't seem to be enough and you're not sure anymore and are in vicious loop of anxiousness, sadness, self-blame, guilt, and grief.

It has been my passion to help people improve their health and well being for over 30 years. I started my career as a Dietitian/Nutritionist, helping people improve their health through nutrition counseling and behavior change. I soon discovered that it takes more than knowledge and good intention to change long held habits, beliefs and behaviors. Childhood trauma, poor self esteem, unhealthy attachments, faulty thinking and dysfunctional relationships all impact our ability to value ourselves and to live a healthy and fullfilling life. I became a psychotherapist to more fully address the whole person - heart, mind and body.

College can be a time of great excitement and new opportunities. However, many young adults realize that may come with expectations and pressure that can be overwhelming and confusing. Facing the challenges of adulthood can make you question who you are and who you’re meant to be. Sometimes, this can make it difficult to function in work or at school, can impact your relationships, and your mental health. You might find it difficult to find motivation to finish schoolwork, get out of bed, calm your mind, concentrate, or even answer text messages from loved ones.

Does life just feel off? Is something wrong but you can't figure out how to fix it? Over time, life stressors build up leaving us feeling depressed, angry and anxious. We cope in by overeating, overexercising, overworking, arguing with the ones we love and fighting with ourselves. Whether it's one or all of these things, it is too much to handle on your own and I want to help you lighten the load.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
