We all go through emotional storms where we feel emotionally and physically stuck; we worry too much and lose control of ourselves. Do you find yourself thrown off balance by your childhood trauma? Childhood traumatic experiences such as abandonment, abuse, and neglect lead to social anxiety. My approach is solution-focused and tailored to your needs and goals. I am committed to providing a profound sense of safety and offering compassionate and actionable guidance to all my clients.

I utilize a multi-disciplinary approach with clients, including family systems theory, cognitive behavioral theory, and person-centered therapy, among others.
I believe that when individuals enter therapy, they can learn to challenge and replace irrational thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes that have kept them trapped in cycles which do not allow them to live their best lives. Through therapy individuals are free to experience change as they learn the tools to let go of what is not working for them. I am passionate about working with individuals who are committed to bettering themselves and making positive shifts in their lives. Taking time to focus on one’s self is hard work, but there is truly nothing more rewarding, and I believe everyone has the ability to change.

Many people in their 7th or 8th decade of life experience some concern about the possibility of Alzheimer's or other dementias, especially if there is a family history of dementia.
Are you dealing memory concerns as you age? Experiencing anxiety about the possibility that memory problems could lead to dementia? Do you want to have a clearer picture of what the memory issues mean and to be provided with specific helpful suggestions in a non-judgmental and caring environment. My style is relaxed but engaging in order to make each assessment or therapy session a meaningful experience. I bring to each meeting a perspective that is shaped not only by my education and training but also by a wide variety of experiences over seven decades of life.

As a mental healthcare professional, educator, and advocate, I am always looking for new ways to provide care for anyone seeking help. My approach is based on understanding each person as a whole, not just the trials or diagnosis they’re facing. I firmly believe in delivering treatment that is both empathetic and uplifting for everyone I have the honor to work with.

Although I have devoted a considerable amount of my professional work toward adolescents and a family systems treatment perspective,at this point in my career, I prefer to define and build a general practice rather than one too focused on a specialty.
I've been in practice over thirty years, dividing my time between my private office ( where i've mostly seen adults) and CHLA Mental Health Clinic where I specialized in adolescents and where I served as one of the training directors for many years. For the last five years, I've devoted my time exclusively to my private practice where I use a range of treatment models ( individual/conjoint/ family) and enjoy working with a diverse clientele in terms of presenting problems, age, gender and sexual orientation.

I press clients to courageously examine their relationships, developmental history, personal narratives, and family of origin to link present distress with dysfunctional attachments and distorted self-images.
I work with individuals, couples, and families. Therapy is an effective way to identify emotional and psychological 'blind spots'. Discovery of blind spots enables clients to make real their vision of happiness and healthy living. Depression, addiction, trauma, relationship problems, and more may often be explained in terms of maladaptive responses to suffering. I work with clients to explore their relationships, developmental history, and willingness to change. Psychological, emotional, and physical engagement in the world are strongly encouraged.

I have extensive experience working with families who are currently fostering a child or have built their family through adoption. I use a trauma informed and neurodevelopmental lens in all of my work, and understand how in utero and early developmental trauma affect children in many areas of their life. As a former foster parent and now an adoptive mom, I further understands how close relationships are created through a sense of safety and trust.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
