The type of therapy used to treat your needs, may either be longer term psychodynamic psychotherapy, or short term treatment modalities such as CBT, MI, CPT, ACT, PE, or DBT, and what is determined to be appropriate.
Accepting new clients as of January 2023 either for VIRTUAL or IN-PERSON psychotherapy. I have worked in the Mental Health field since 1997. Sometimes one may need someone who is available only for you. As a therapist I provide a safe place where you can be vulnerable about painful behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Perhaps you are feeling sad, angry, anxious, confused, or emotionally paralyzed. You may be unable to control negative thoughts, unhealthy behaviors, a pattern of engaging in unhealthy relationships, or may be repeating destructive patterns. Perhaps you get distressed from memories related to traumatic events.

My style is integrative; informed by ACT, compassionate inquiry and solution focused therapy.
You don't need to feel stuck anymore! Stagnation is a message that something needs to change. Processing emotions, thoughts and big and small traumas with a therapist can help you move through life toward comfort and ease. I help individuals and couples gain perspective on unhelpful thoughts and behaviors, learn to use your feelings as a guide to define your future by looking compassionately at your perception of yourself, your relationships, your health, how you have fun, and your career. Authenticity is being at home in your body which allows you to express yourself clearly; authenticity is closely linked to happiness.

With a blend of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, I am prepared to walk with you on the path of transformation.
We all carry unique burdens of the mind, pains of our history, and cultural programming. It is true that we all experience suffering in one form or another as a natural part of life. It is also true that this suffering can be transformed and transcended. Through this transformation it is possible to experience a more connected relationship with the world within and around us. I am open to serve those experiencing PTSD, depression, anxiety, addiction, chronic pain, and spiritual confusion. I am also open to serving those interested in cultivating meditation and other spiritual practices, and generally enhancing quality of life.

I see clients in California and MN for telehealth psychotherapy. In my practice, I help people overcome their personal obstacles to change and get unstuck. Together, we identify those issues which we can change and those that we can accept. Over the past 30 years, I have helped people create healthy movement in their lives and to develop a balanced design for living that can serve as a foundation for years to come. I strive to provide an atmosphere that is respectful and safe. It is very important to me that clients know that they have a voice in the treatment process so that the treatment is individualized to meet their needs.

Anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship issues, lasting effects of past trauma, and other sources of upset can be stressful and challenging to handle. Choosing therapy can be an important step in support of relief, healing, and reaching goals. In therapy, problems and challenges can be re-framed as opportunities for improved self-care, reflection, positive action, learning and growth. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, the Gottman Method for Couples, Mindfulness Techniques, current research on habit formation, as well as many other relevant and helpful tools to assist you in reaching your goals.

Finding the right psychologist is the most important part of the therapeutic process. What might be right for one might not be right for another. In addition to being a licensed Psychologist, I have received additional training in EMDR therapy for trauma as well as non-opiate approaches to pain management. I have worked with individuals seeking recovery from drug and alcohol addiction as well as couples and families. I have also worked with individuals who are just looking to navigate the storm, short term therapy to see them through a specific challenge or to gain insight and a new perspective on what may be a long standing issue.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
