For over 20 years, I have worked in urban and suburban schools before transitioning to private practice in 2020. K-5 has been my most recent focus, and have worked with middle and high school students in previous years. I have supported students with anxiety, social and behavioral challenges, mood, grief, and attention difficulties. Working collaboratively with parents we can help your child feel a sense of belonging, uncover the frustrations and worry, relieve symptoms of anxiety, and reduce the anger and behavioral challenges using a strength-based approach. I'm here to help!

I am here to help you find some peace and calm in this storm of life. Although that sounds a bit cliche, life seems to be getting more complicated by the day- I want to support you in whatever way you or your family need. My experience is with a range of issues, ages, and cultural diversities, including working through family conflict, helping with behavior modification for your young child or learning how to connect with your teen. I also work with adults dealing with job stress, relationship issues, or those struggling to find passion and drive.

Hi I’m Diana Martinez! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW.) For me, therapy is about getting you back to your previous level of functioning prior to developing mental health illness and assisting you in moving to a better, peaceful you. I have spent the past 20 years working as a therapist to do just that. When I’m not practicing therapy, I’m spending time with my husband, adult children, grandbabies, and hanging out with my large extended family. I enjoy brisk walking, watching movies, organizing, and gardening.

My clients seek integrative solutions to complex and distressful problems for their own or their children's thoughts, emotions, and bodily experiences. While talk-based therapies are helpful, a relational approach may not be enough to solve acute or chronic mental health challenges. Yet, anxiety, depression, insomnia, OCD, PTSD, or developmental-learning disabilities often respond to personalized and holistic mind-body approaches. My ideal client is looking for more than an expert to talk with about their challenges or symptoms. They are open to exploring new methods and strategies to beneficially transform their life.

I have adopted a solution-focused approach in my practice and I aim to help each client reach their full potential. I have more than 15 years of experience working with children and families in different settings and 8 years working with clients in recovery. I hold a safe space for everyone to explore and process areas that bring challenges, discomfort, and fluctuating emotions. I believe that a lot can be achieved during therapy, but the real work continues between sessions.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
