I always knew I wanted to join the mental health field in order to destigmatize mental health conditions, advance social justice, and promote open and honest conversations about mental illness. My personal and professional experiences have cultivated my passion in both micro and macro work in the mental health field. I value working with adults who may be facing mental health challenges such as OCD, anxiety, and depression. I primarily use ERP and CBT treatment methods but also pull from other therapeutic modalities.

I am trained in PCIT, CBT, and completed my year-long doctoral internship with Rogers Memorial Hospital in Wisconsin specializing in treatment of OCD via ERP in residential, inpatient, and outpatient settings.
While I approach therapy from a Cognitive Behavioral perspective, focusing on challenging thoughts and changing behaviors, I do so with the primary focus on respect for my patients and their individual issues. I want you to feel supported in session but also know that you will be challenged and tasked with completing goals in between sessions. I greatly enjoy helping my patients reach their own goals to be successful in their life, especially in the areas of social relationships, academics, employment, and self-care.

Each individual experiences life's journey in a personally unique manner while weaving the tapestry of lived experience into a meaningful and beautiful pattern reflecting their journey. As most of us have discovered, however, sometimes the actual experience can be fraught with anxiety, depression, anger, regret and disappointment. As a therapist, I use my education and life experience to help clients reconnect with their hopes, dreams, personal and professional goals using their undiscovered strengths and natural resilience. We will work together to find practical strategies to make life energizing, meaningful and rewarding again.

My approach to treatment is based in principles of Cognitive Behavior Therapy. I am drawn to this approach because it provides a clear structure for the process of therapy that is accessible to clients from diverse backgrounds. This approach is also collaborative and allows clients to be active participants in treatment. I believe that when clients take an active role in therapy, they are empowered and feel hopeful about the future. I also believe that helpful therapy starts with a healthy therapeutic relationship.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapists

Do I need exposure and response prevention therapy?

Many clients decide to seek help for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors when these symptoms are distressing enough to disrupt everyday life. Any thoughts or behaviors that cause friction in close relationships are also worth addressing. In addition, the client’s symptoms don’t have to be severe for them to benefit from ERP therapy.

Is exposure and response prevention therapy part of cognitive behavioral therapy?

Exposure and response prevention is one specific type of CBT that focuses on behavioral change in response to triggering stimuli. It is related to exposure therapy but adds an additional component of preventing compulsive and harmful responses.

How long does exposure and response prevention therapy take?

While every patient is different, exposure and response prevention therapy typically lasts around 12 sessions, although some treatments can take longer. A therapist will determine if the treatment is complete based on how the client faces their fears, particularly the strongest ones. When a client feels less anxiety about stimuli that once evoked terror or distress, that is generally an indication that they are nearing the end of ERP therapy.

What are the limitations of exposure and response prevention therapy?

The most common pitfalls of exposure and response prevention therapy include not addressing a client’s core fears, allowing the client to avoid their most distressing stimuli, and using imaginary exposure when the client requires real-life exposure (and vice versa). ERP therapy is most effective when the client commits to the full course of treatment; if the client stops early or doesn’t practice what they have learned outside of therapy sessions, they are less likely to have successful outcomes.
