I have many years of experience working with all age groups, people with disabilities, neurodivergent minds, people with autism, LGBTQ+, anxiety, depression, adjustment challenges, grief and loss, aging, dissociation, and loneliness. I highly value supporting people in creating an understanding of the barriers they face both internally and externally that keep them from moving toward the life they want to live and, together, creating a plan to slowly work toward better days.

My name is Dr. Paul Van Zeumeren, but Dr. Paul or Dr. Z. will do given the length of my last name. Although I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in California, I do not work with couples and families in therapy. Rather, I use the systems approach to inform individuals how familial experiences may be affecting current relationships and outlooks. I hold a Psy. D. in clinical psychology with a specialization in Family Systems/Dynamics. I held a C.A.T.C., which is a certified addiction treatment counselor while working towards my licensure and degrees, so I am a specialist in recovery from substance use disorders.

I have worked extensively with trauma survivors, people with anxiety, relationship difficulties, insecurities and self-doubt.
If you have found yourself struggling, worrying, feeling down, depressed and or stuck it might be the time to seek help. Whether you’ve recently noticed these challenges or they have been ongoing seeking therapy has the potential to relieve theses symptoms, figure out what’s driving them, assist in identifying different and new ways to cope and move more easily through life and towards your goals. Greater insight into oneself and discovering your potential and or expanding your potential and moving forward can be accomplished through therapy.

My ideal client is the silent struggler - someone who's been trying to weather life's storms alone, believing they should have all the answers. Their issues often stem from isolation, manifesting as anxiety, depression, or a pervasive sense of disconnect. Their core need? A true ally to stand beside them, validating their experiences and challenges. They're ready to discover that seeking support isn't a weakness, but the first step towards discovering an authentic and fulfilling life.

Hello! My name is Peter Kehoe, LMFT. I was licensed in 2002 and have had an eclectic and sometimes electric life experience to date. I believe in self determination and using support teams and individuals to create positive orientation. I started my journey in this field working with alcoholic adults in a group setting in the early '80s and later moved to a long term residential setting with adolescents with drug and alcohol issues. My internship was in an upper class community with the scions of these families that had substance use and behavioral disorders. Individual and family therapy were the mediums in those cases.

Anxiety Therapists
What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
