Hello, I'm Alan Lawrence, licensed clinical social worker (LCS12658). I hold three master's degrees in psychology, social work and gerontology. We age from birth with many challenges and changes as we grow older. A burden shared is a burden lifted. Accomplish your goals and move forward. Learning lessons from the past and understanding your thinking process and internal dialogue (cognitive-behavioral) will empower you with new insights and direction. Let's get started. I customize therapy sessions to the individual's needs. I can be eclectic but do emphasize cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic approaches to treatment.

This wasn't how it was supposed to go. You're worried you will feel this way forever, that you will never feel like yourself again. Maybe you’re reading this because your parenting experience is not what you expected it to be, in fact, it’s probably been pretty awful so far. Perhaps you’ve experienced child, infant, or pregnancy loss and there are really no words to describe the void you feel right now. The loss is inexpressible and you feel so alone. Or you’re struggling to cope with chronic illness, grief, or life stressors. You feel like you’re hiking through a forest without a map... you just want to find a path forward.

I specialize in supporting individuals struggling with chronic illness, trauma, and attachment wounding.
At one point or another, we all experience a difficult phase in life. Anxieties, interpersonal conflicts, fears about the future, and illness can lead us to feel isolated and defeated. These feelings can be overwhelming at times and take a toll on our quality of life, relationships, and self worth. Many of my clients are living with a chronic illness and trying to navigate the loss of a pre-diagnosis life in the hopes of gaining a better understanding of a post-diagnosis identity. Other clients have a history of anxiety or trauma that is still negatively impacting their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

You deserve to feel hopeful, encouraged, unburdened, and balanced in all areas of your life as a first responder (leo, fire, ems, dispatch, nurse, doctor, etc), first responder spouse, helping professional, postpartum parent, trauma survivor (including birth trauma), within pregnancy or as an individual living with a chronic illness. Whether you’ve been to therapy before or this is brand new, I know this can be uncomfortable or a point of hope when connecting with the right therapist where long-lasting change becomes possible.

Chronic Illness Therapists
How does therapy for chronic illness work?
Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.
Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?
Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?
No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.
How long does therapy for chronic illness take?
There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
