If alcohol and other substances became the only way for you to deal with daily problems, I can help you to navigate through the endless circle. As parents, we face unique, everyday challenges dealing with our families and professional life. Oftentimes, we neglect to care for our needs and wants. Each person has a unique situation, and I will make your journey to recovery easier. I use motivational interviewing, positive psychology, and many other methods to help my client to overcome the substance use disorder.

Is alcohol or another substance holding you back? Are you a professional or executive who has found that the one thing you haven't been able to overcome is substance use? Many clinicians don't truly understand the stress and loneliness that professional success can create. My experience as a senior executive and addiction professional can help you break free and achieve your true potential. Don't let substance abuse be the one thing you haven't been able to overcome as a professional. I utilize positive counseling techniques designed to capitalize on your strengths to help you overcome substance use and achieve your potential.

There is an old saying that in the course of every human life, one encounters 10,000 joys and 10,000 sorrows. Whether we consider ourselves young, old, rich, poor, famous or not, we all are equal in our fundamental experiences: no matter who we are, we experience birth and death, love and heartbreak, joy and despair. I see my role as a therapist as helping my fellow humans deal with the inevitable losses that come with living, be it loss of an identity, loss of self-worth, loss of a loved one, loss of a relationship, loss of joy. Even just the thought of future loss can be painful, leading to persistent anxiety and worry.

Do you sometimes ask yourself: I feel angry, disappointed, or depressed. What can I do? I tried everything, nothing works in the long term. Why are my relationships so unfulfilling? During sessions, you are guided to discover the parts of your Self that are in conflict. They have conflicting goals, perspectives, and beliefs. Those "parts" often pull you in opposite directions - "I want to eat, but I also want to lose weight" for example. Then you criticize yourself for not being more responsible, productive, etc... Get to understand why they pull you in opposite directions and how to negotiate with them.

Asking for help is hard. However, once you take that first step, it can be life-changing. Anything is possible by learning practical communication skills and building a positive self-view. My approach prioritizes my client’s needs and input to help them help themselves. I hold degrees in psychology and Biology, which provide an awareness and understanding of biological, chemical, and psychological intersections for mental health treatment.

I enjoy working with people who have addictions or anxiety or something else weighing them down, working with them for a relatively short period of time, and watching them become energized and passionate about their lives. I believe that my clients know themselves better than anyone else. I work to help my clients achieve their goals. I believe I can best serve people by using what research has shown to be effective. I do not believe therapy should take a long time; most of my clients graduate within 3-6 months. I work on an time-sensitive basis so some require more sessions.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
