I support clients using bottom-up processing; integrating somatic awareness with cognitive narratives to better support behavior and experience in life. Our bodies keep track of experiences and I help your mind become aware and more aligned so you can walk through the world feeling whole. Regardless of your self-identification, trauma and maladaptive behaviors have shaped how we move through the world and I work to help you live and experience life versus surviving challenges and barriers. From a social justice lens, I support liberating you from social constructs, and helping you settle into what you know best; being you.

Sakeenah Hakim, LCSW utilizes a strength based and holistic approach that emphasizes mindfulness and recognizes the effects of trauma on behavior and development. She prioritizes the client’s needs and encourages a partnership dynamic when establishing, implementing, and meeting the client’s treatment goals. I have a nonjudgmental client centered humanistic approach. I’m patient and respect the process it takes to build a rapport. I'm a licensed clinical therapist in California with 5 years of professional work experience. My therapy style is mixed, although pleasant and educational. I believe in being truthful with my clients. I believe in treating them with respect and compassion. However, I’m able to tailor sessions and treatment plans to meet your unique needs. It takes courage to seek out a more fulfilling and happier life. Making a decision to take the first steps towards a change can be scary. I am here to support and empower you in that journey.

Having a good relationship with oneself is a process and a practice, and can be cultivated through the therapeutic process. Every relationship is dependent on how we talk to ourselves, and this inner conversation is what therapy can shift. If you have the willingness, huge transformation is possible. I am in this field to help people sort out a way through and beyond unnecessary suffering, and towards deep peace with themselves and others. I have successfully treated high-functioning CEOs as well as people traumatized, addicted, and broke. Being human is challenging, and with the right support, beautiful. Call. I can help!

For more than a decade, I have successfully helped individuals, couples, and families find greater clarity about what they want their life to stand for and how to pursue that life. Within a supportive therapeutic relationship, I help my clients attain the vibrant and valued life they desire. My approach in therapy is active. I work based on the assumption that clients are able to achieve rapid and significant changes in their behaviors. The interventions used in this approach help clients access alternative ways of "problem solving" that utilize the resources beyond the "common-sense" mind. https://effective-therapy.com/

You want to reignite connection and passion with your partner. The distance between you seems vast and has been there for so long that you don't know how to bridge it anymore. The love between the two of you used to be strong but you don't know how to bring it back. You know you both played a role in creating the distance. You want to fix it but you aren't sure about your partner. You'd like to try therapy but you need someone sharp enough to keep up with you.

Are you overwhelmed by the number of things you "have to do" when you don't "want to do" any of them? Some days, you might feel stuck in a rut and can’t get out. You might feel like are holding everything together, but you aren’t enjoying your life. You may question the direction of your life. When you stop to think about it, you may realize don't like the path you are on. Yet, you aren’t sure whether it's scarier that you don’t often question the path or how often you continue to march down the path knowing how you feel. Yes, it’s a scary place to be, but you gathered up the courage to take the first step. Most people don't.

Not accepting new clients
Anxiety, panic, depression, and mood swings can make you feel like you are being stalked by an invisible tiger. Depression and anxiety can make your life problems feel insurmountable. It can be a very lonely and scary experience. But it doesn't have to be. And, there is reason to have hope, particularly since you have taken the important step of reaching out for help.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
