Are you tired of being unable to do the things you want to do, but repeatedly do the things you do not want to do? Are your best intentions producing the kind of relational fruit you desire in your relationships? The invisible pain from the emotional, relational, and spiritual realm activates the same region of your brain that is under physical pain. The need for proper attention and treatment for this invisible pain is as urgent and necessary as physical pain. Your pain will be properly metabolized through validation and comfort and ready to be resurrected as wisdom, strength, and compassion

I believe that every person has the capacity to change from within. I see my role as a therapist to walk alongside and hold space for you to connect with yourself - to your body, your inner resources, and your wisdom. Together, we can make meaning of your past while increasing safety and joy in the present so that you can step into your chosen future. Many of my clients experience doubts about their worthiness and their ability to change engrained patterns or heal from past wounds. They struggle with people-pleasing, codependency, perfectionism, chronic shame, unexpressed grief, and connecting to their intuition.

I am a psychotherapist specializing in depth-oriented therapy, helping clients who experience symptoms and behaviors with unconscious roots. By exploring the symbolic nature of these issues, we can uncover their deeper meaning and find solutions beyond surface-level interventions. I believe in the power of self-actualization and help clients overcome inner conflicts that hinder their potential. We work collaboratively to identify the underlying needs and develop a personalized treatment plan that may utilize various approaches, including solution-focused, cognitive-behavioral, and depth-psychological techniques.

Do you feel stuck? Stuck in an unhealthy relationship? Stuck in the same emotional state - anxious, fearful, depressed, numb? Stuck in communication patterns that leave you feeling empty? You keep trying to feel or be something different but it just doesn't work? feeling stuck can be one of the most paralyzing states. As Sheryl Sandberg says, "We cannot change what we are not aware of, and once we are aware, we cannot help but change." With curiosity as our leader let's become aware of what we feel and why we feel it. By leaning in we can begin to move.

"I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become." ~ Carl Jung. Do you feel overwhelmed, have pain, grief, anxiety, depression, or unseen shadows that prevent you from healing or from choosing better decisions, relationships, and allowing yourself to matter in your own life? My experience and education can help people hungering for more purpose, fulfillment, and nurturing relationships instead of dissonance, exhaustion, and sacrifice, those who know what you were aiming for, but discovered you’re at the top of the wrong ladder. If you feel like you’re different or unseen, then I may be the psychotherapist you’ve sought.

Are you struggling with low self esteem, needing to be perfect, feeling you're a burden, or people pleasing? When we grow up in situations that did not feel safe and loving, we come up with these beliefs/ways of being as a way to help us feel a little more safe (I know, hard to believe!). These beliefs help us feel we have control, but as we grow up, these beliefs can create difficulties within us and in our adult relationships.

If you're someone who's had trauma, an illness, recent loss, relationship struggles strong emotions of anger and/or saddness that are getting in the way of living fully, I'm here, bringing my 20+ years experience helping folks work through barriers to lasting change. Often past experiences cause us to develop creative ways of surviving that don't function well with our current life. I work with folks on processing their present concerns while keeping an open door to looking at the past and dreams that inform, revealing the source of repeating patterns. I help people to transform their pain into new meaningful emotional experience.

Seeking the support of a therapist can be a powerful step toward increasing self-awareness and the ability to change patterns that are no longer working. Change in therapy happens through a process of increased self-understanding, practicing new ways of engaging (with yourself, with others, with a particular problem or set of issues), and development and practice of coping strategies. I collaborate with my clients to identify and work toward treatment goals, using a combination of practical skills and deeper work to explore and repair root issues that may be contributing to current problems.

To be human can mean that joy and pain, love and despair, connection and loneliness, energy and apathy, all occur within the same internal space. When that space becomes overwhelmed with pain, shame, or fear, we can feel as though we’re running on fumes - burned-out, disconnected, feeling stuck or paralyzed. Thoughts and emotions affect the way we move through life; and consciously or not, past emotional and relational wounds affect how we approach the present and future. Therapy can be a powerful aid in healing wounds and nurturing joy, connection, meaning, and new ways of being.

Marital Therapy: Contemporary Relational Theories, Imago Relationship Therapy, Various Communication Models.
The most fascinating and important part of my job as a therapist is how to have a really good conversation. It may sound too simple, but it cuts to the heart of what to expect from therapy. Through good conversation, you experience connection and understanding. When we are understood, difficult feelings change with resulting freedoms to engage life. Trained both as a Marriage and Family therapist and a psychoanalyst, I work with complex relationship issues, divorce and blended families, depression, anxiety, addictions, men's issues, and sexual trauma recovery, and integration of psychology and faith/spirituality.

I practice from both a relational and an attachment based framework. It’s widely known that the main driver of successful outcome in psychotherapy is the quality of the relationship between the patient and the clinician. It is also acknowledged that the majority of mental health issues are either caused, maintained, or intensified by unhealthy relationships. For these reasons, I place a great deal of emphasis upon our relationship as a foundation for implementing any clinical interventions.

I enjoy working with people who are open to looking at themselves in new and different ways. I help clients explore how their issues develop and how to make healthy choices toward change. I believe we are all influenced by our most important relationships and in therapy I help clients figure out how past relational patterns are being repeated right now. When we can understand that, we can create new relationship possibilities that work better. I enjoy working with graduate students and professionals in the community. I love helping clients who are involved in the arts (musicians, actors, painters, dancers).

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
