Does it feel like life has been pulled out from under you? Do you feel overwhelmed or discouraged? Perhaps you’re dealing with trust or communication issues in your family or marriage. I work with couples and individuals struggling with problems like family conflict, past abuse, anxiety, substance misuse, and more. Throughout my 35 years of experience as a mental health professional, I’ve learned that most people are seeking one thing in particular – to feel more in control of their life. We all need validation and support. I provide this for my clients, while helping them feel more confident and hopeful about the future.

My goal in therapy is to assist you in cultivating balance in your internal and external worlds. Whether that is through focusing on emotion or thought, rebalancing your relationships, finding stability in managing the psychological symptoms of chronic pain or cultivating internal safety and calm to combat memories of pain and trauma.

I work with a lot of college students, parents, and corporate workers to help bring out our strengths and guide you towards greater alignment within yourself. I have a specialty interest and intensive training experience in prenatal and postpartum mental health. So if you're a new parent, I'd be happy to help you navigate the beginning of parenthood. As a yoga student and teacher, I'm a big fan of using yoga practices to assist with healing.

Hello, my name is Cecelia Pooley Gillespie, LCSW, SEP. I work with all ages, with a recent focus on youth and families, including those in rural and Indigenous communities.. I can help with anxiety, depression, PTSD, stress, parenting, life transitions, and more. My therapeutic approach is strengths based and solution focused. While I find the cognitive and behavioral lens of CBT, DBT and Narrative Therapy to be valuable, I believe it can be important at times to also incorporate Experiential Therapy, such as creativity, movement, and expression, as well as Somatic work for exploring the mind-body connection.

Do you feel overwhelmed by current challenges? Are you plagued with shame, guilt, resentment or fear related to the past? Anxiety and depression, destructive coping behaviors, and unresolvable intimacy issues all reflect something of our struggle to love and be loved. When our need for tools to manage the difficulties of life weren't adequately met in early childhood, disordered states and destructive patterns help us cope with unaddressed emotions. You don't need to continue suffering alone. I provide a supportive, collaborative, non-judgmental space for healing and growth.

Rarely is change easy, and frequently it is the last option we choose because it requires courage and strength, which during difficult times may feel insurmountable. I would like to offer you my perspective on courage, change and transformation; I believe they are small movements forward when you feel like you can’t move at all. That movement can be as little as being open to the idea of change, which can lead to a willingness to do something different. Therapy is a safe environment where we can explore the shadows together, shining a light into the darkness and softening the fears surrounding them.

Is anxiety, depression, or trauma holding you back from being your true self? Do you feel stuck in managing difficult life transitions? Now, every little thing becomes super overwhelming. Those negative experiences reopen old wounds and cause new ones. You tried burying your pain hoping it would go away. You feel lonely and tormented. You feel exhausted, stressed, and angry all the time. You wonder how much more you can take. You are unsure of who or where to turn for help. In the midst of this painful journey, you do not have to go through it alone.

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
