The problems we experience, and the context in which we experience them, can make it seem as if we are defective, as if there is something fundamentally wrong with who we are. Problems can saturate our lives until we think we've been robbed of the power to change. This is not so! We can change our relationship to our problems, through our own strengths and unique knowledge. Eitan is trained in Narrative Therapy, a collaborative approach that separates "the problem" from the person experiencing this problem, and which seeks to help people tell new stories about their lives.

Everything has changed since your loss. Your loved one is gone, and you’re absolutely crushed. Nothing feels real, and you’re not sure things will ever be normal again. People offer well-meaning advice about “time healing all wounds,” but you don’t see how that’s possible. There’s a gaping hole left in your heart, and you can’t imagine how any amount of time, care, or healing will change that. On top of the emotional devastation is the stress of all the logistics. Planning funeral arrangements, organizing finances, dividing inheritances – all seem to bring out the worst in everyone around you. You feel so alone and helpless.

You’re buckling your toddler into his car seat as he screams bloody murder. What horrible atrocity did you commit that caused him to melt down like this? You made him wear shoes, but he wants to be barefoot like The Hulk. You monster. It would be funny if it weren’t so frustrating. These tantrums are happening with greater frequency. Dropping him off at school when he’s like this fills you with guilt. You’re terrified that your parenting is somehow to blame for his behavior, and you worry about his future. You’ve tried everything you can think of to make some change; punishments, rewards, threats, pleading. But nothing works.

Another fight – more shouting, stomping, and slamming doors. You don’t get it. Your parents say they want you to act like an adult, but then they treat you like a child. Make it make sense! If only they understood what you’re going through. The pressure comes from all sides – parents, teachers, social media, and friends. It’s like everyone has something to criticize you for; “Your grades aren’t good enough,” “You’ll never get into college,” “You’re not as pretty as the other girls.” Meanwhile, you’re trying your best, and their negativity just makes you feel more discouraged. You wish there were someone to help you through this.

You’re desperate for some relief. It feels like the pressure of the world is sitting on your shoulders, slowly crushing you under its weight. If it’s not one thing, it’s another; dealing with your toxic ex, being undervalued at work and home, or simply living as a Black man in a systemically racist society. You try so hard to keep it all together, but sometimes you snap at friends and loved ones. You’ve begun to wonder if these troubles stem from past experiences. Your mother did her best, but you saw some terrible things growing up. If only there were some way to make sense of these overwhelming thoughts and emotions, but how?

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
