My name is Priscilla Willmott and I'm a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. I approach mental health issues like depression and anxiety as a natural consequence of our environment and the inability to be accepted as our true selves in the contexts we live in. I use experiential therapy, which is a process-oriented perspective that aims to restore and recover the parts of our authenticity that were detached as a result of our environments.

We generally use several approaches, including Experiential Therapy, Mindfulness, CBT & DBT (for practical skills), IFS, Brainspotting, and Yoga methods, depending on your needs and personality.
If you are struggling with mood, anxiety, motivation, energy, sleep, adjusting to a new baby, relationship turbulence, or difficulties at work or school, I may be able to help. I work with a lot of college students, parents, and corporate workers to help bring out our strengths and guide you towards greater alignment within yourself. I have a specialty interest and intensive training experience in prenatal and postpartum mental health. So if you're a new parent, I'd be happy to help you navigate the beginning of parenthood. As a yoga student and teacher, I'm a big fan of using yoga practices to assist with healing.

The process of experiential therapy helps clients to feel, explore and expand upon experiences through various techniques that include personal history.
The decision to start therapy with a licensed professional is like setting out on an expedition to both rediscover old territories and to discover new territories. One set of questions therapy asks is “What is it like to be me now?” “How do my past experiences affect who I am now?” “What is getting in my way, preventing me from being the person I feel I can be?” What we talk about during each meeting are those issues that are important to you in your everyday life, relationships, job, parents, children, things that make you feel happy, sad, depressed, or confused.

Do you work in a highly competitive industry like entertainment, tech, or healthcare? Are you exhausted by the intense pressure to perform and impress? In spite of your achievements, you may be struggling with anxiety, depression, or chronic stress. You may feel burned out or confused about your identity and self-worth. Perhaps the constant striving, a difficult relationship, or a work-related setback has tanked your motivation or damaged your self esteem. You may be battling procrastination, imposter syndrome, self-doubt, or self-sabotaging behavior - even though you're extremely capable and want to thrive. I get it and I can help.

My goal is to help you achieve your goals. Having done this work for 30 years the issues that have sadly remained consistent are the high levels of child sexual abuse and adult sexual assault, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. A significant number of people will have an assault in their lifetime, so you are not alone. My doc dissertation was on sexual trauma, resilience (surviving), & posttraumatic growth (thriving). I am dedicated to all types of trauma and see that people can not only get better but they can choose the life they wish to live, often with help of a therapist and a desire to change.

I trained in Boston. Boston College was my graduate school, Beth Israel Hospital the site of my clinical education, and MIT, where I was a Senior Research Associate, the start of my professional career. In 1976, I emerged a licensed clinical psychologist in Massachusetts and began a practice treating young people, couples and families. I also worked as a community therapist with teachers, parents and students, to help integrate three Boston's public schools.

I am not a typical therapist. I see myself as a co-author, witness, helpful ally, teammate, collaborator and useful resource. Rather than taking a role as an “expert” by making assumptions or interpretations about your life, I love to use skillful conversation and artful question-asking to help you get past obstacles and problems. You are here on this page because you have strength in you, you have desire in you and you have healing in you. You are the main character in your own life. Therapy can either help or hinder the development of this character as someone powerful, capable and whole.

This right now, finding a therapist, is probably not fun, in fact, it may be a very uncomfortable experience. Hopefully right now is the most difficult part on this path. If you are already browsing therapists then it would seem you're at least contemplating some kind of transformation. Change does not have to be scary, it can also be relieving, rewarding, and a source of achievement. I believe personal growth is for everyone, no matter where you are in your life. Whether you identified a problem, struggle in a relationship, or just want to experience therapy, I'm here.

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
