I work with individuals and couples, specializing in gay male/LGBTQ populations.
Are you feeling stuck in relationships, jobs, or entrenched beliefs about yourself that may not be valid? Unhealthy thoughts, feelings, behaviors and attachments can create patterns that lead to anxiety, depression, addiction and more. The definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results.” If you want to break the cycle, therapy can be a powerful tool in helping you identify problem areas and begin your personal transformation. The process begins with having someone who will listen, understand your needs, uncover stressors and seek solutions.

I am dedicated to helping others improve the quality of their lives. I have a deep respect for those who come into my office and want to look at issues that can often be very painful and challenging. We all have areas that we struggle with at different times. I provide a very compassionate approach, one that will help you gain insight into what gets in the way of you having a fuller, healthier and happier life.

My practice offers a safe place for reflection and curiosity. Once my clients' lives start functioning better, they find new meaning and purpose. Clients enjoy my proactive approach built on trust and collaboration, with an emphasis on gaining better understanding and connection with themselves and the people in their lives. If you are considering starting therapy, you are likely feeling stuck in feelings of either depression or anxiety; in unsatisfying personal relationships; or in career frustrations. You are often making decisions and acting in ways that are counterproductive.

At times, we all need help with everyday challenges -and even more so when problems show up. It is difficult to reach out for help. Especially in a culture that emphasizes self-reliance and independence. Problems (such as depression or anxiety) can disconnect us from the relationships that might help us to heal. Since 2016, I have worked with individuals, couples, & families to manage the problems they are facing and help re-connect them to significant relationships. I have helped others with relationship challenges, trauma, depression, anxiety, grief/loss, and addiction.

For BIPOC people and LGBTQIA+ folks, finding a space to be their authentic and unique selves feels impossible. Those of us who have been "othered" live in a world full of oppression as well as hurt, pain and trauma. This oppression leads to depression, anxiety, image issues, substance abuse, risky behaviors and self harm. My role as a therapist is to create that safe environment to work through the trauma, re-write the narrative and empower people to be their best versions of themselves that fosters love, acceptance, and healing.

I'm driven by the power of hu man connection and the amazing growth and transformation it can bring.
As a queer identified therapist with a passion for both mental health and the entertainment industry, I believe that a combination of a queer affirmative lens and my background in perfor mance make me different from other therapists. My work in entertainment allows me to bring a creative and innovative approach to therapy so I can provide a unique and valuable experience to every client. While I primarily work within the LGBT community, my approach with all clients is rooted in the belief that everyone has the power to transform their life, I’m here to help them do just that.

I'm a psychotherapist working with individuals, couples and families in the LA area and Sandpoint, Idaho. 25 years experience in one location and challenge the problems facing our complex and diverse society today. I believe in the Unity of Life. From the earliest single cell forms of life, to the complex hu man organism, there is a basic energetic function that unites: Pain & Pleasure, Thinking & Emotion, Mind & Body, Man & Wo men, Family & Society. When this unitary function is disrupted and blocked, healthy life suffers. Conflict and stress from this unitary disruption often results in irrationality, unhappiness and/or disease.

I have a passion for seeing my clients have a transformational experience, evolving toward becoming more self realized persons. Let's talk about your difficulties, fears, or sadness. Let's understand your anxiety or anger. And let's do it in a warm and safe space where we will set judgment aside. We'll explore how you became who you are today, and perhaps along the way you'll discover a kinder view of yourself, capable of moving away from bitterness or anger, unleashing your creativity, and ultimately knowing yourself through your profound relationships with others.

As an Asian-American DACAmented bilingual/bicultural therapist, my heart lies in supporting members of the AAPI community and other ethnic minorities who have experienced marginalization due to their intersection of identities (ie. spirituality, sexuality/LGBTQ, legal status, cultural backgroud). I work with individuals who have experienced religious and relational trauma, attachment wounds, imposter syndrome, low self-esteem, dysfunctional relationships, and repressed sexuality, as a result of internalized cultural and societal messages they were exposed to that have further perpetuated an oppressive narrative around who they are.

Speak your heart, live your truth! Are you feeling overwhelmed with the direction of your life? Is your job not emotionally or financially satisfying? Do you find yourself having difficult, short-lived relationships, or worse - none at all? Is depression and/or anxiety wearing you down? It is my experience that our difficulties and problems are primarily determined by reactions to how we think and feel. I can help you understand how your thoughts and feelings prevent you from getting what you want, and then help you find ways of creating more success in the areas you desire to change.

Reaching out for help is one of the most humbling experiences we can go through in life. In a world that is constantly pushing narratives on us based on race, gender, sexuality and/or dominant cultural beliefs, it is life-affirming to engage preferred narratives that support and empower our own values. In difficult times it is easy to feel misunderstood or lost, longing to reconnect with our own resources. My work aims for those reconnections. My approach is collaborative, working from a place of respectful curiosity. I am not the expert on your lived experience. You are.

Change can feel impossible. No matter how badly we want it, we feel stuck in a loop trying the same things over and over. We want a sense of relief, for things to feel easier, but it can feel hopeless constantly fighting the same battles. Despite this, I do believe we are all inherently resilient. We possess unique strengths, but they get shielded from our view because societal expectations and past experiences box us into how we think we ‘should’ be or act. We no longer see ourselves as who we actually are, but rather who the world has told us we are. We want to hold more hopeful beliefs about ourselves and the future.

I am Dale Ryder LCSW and look forward to assisting you on your healing journey. I utilize a needs-based approach to guiding and managing mental health concerns including trauma, depression, anxiety, and other related issues. When one is able to release the patterns from the past and redefine needs the body can resource itself and be present. I utilize needs assessment and getting actual needs met over wounded needs. This includes parts work, looking at how those parts adapted and began to function from the wound. A strengths-based approach is then applied to the perceived weaknesses and a new definition of self, and needs emerges.

You want to appear successful & look like you have it “all together” but deep down you’re struggling to cope with challenging experiences that have occurred in your life and coping mechanisms that aren’t working well anymore. This makes you feel overwhelmed and uncertain, like you’re not in the driver’s seat of your own life. Perhaps you’ve been considering making significant changes but feel unsure of how to move forward or maybe a significant, unexpected life event has stopped you in your tracks. You never expected to be in this situation. You may feel bogged down and isolated and it’s hard to see how to move forward.

I believe therapy should be comprised of what I call the "3 Cs”: compassion, curiosity, and clarity. My commitment to you is to always come from a compassionate and non-judgmental place. During our work together, we will work on you developing the highest level of compassion for yourself and navigate uncomfortable and painful feelings of shame, confusion, guilt, anger, regret, hopelessness, and simply feeling “not good enough.” Curiosity is a fundamental part of our work. I will encourage you to ask yourself: ‘Why do I feel this way?’ ‘Why do I have this relationship?’, ‘Why do I engage in this behavior, when I know it’s bad for me?

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
