I am Dale Ryder LCSW and look forward to assisting you on your healing journey. I utilize a needs-based approach to guiding and managing mental health concerns including trauma, depression, anxiety, and other related issues. When one is able to release the patterns from the past and redefine needs the body can resource itself and be present. I utilize needs assessment and getting actual needs met over wounded needs. This includes parts work, looking at how those parts adapted and began to function from the wound. A strengths-based approach is then applied to the perceived weaknesses and a new definition of self, and needs emerges.

As an Asian-American DACAmented bilingual/bicultural therapist, my heart lies in supporting members of the AAPI community and other ethnic minorities who have experienced marginalization due to their intersection of identities (ie. spirituality, sexuality/LGBTQ, legal status, cultural backgroud). I work with individuals who have experienced religious and relational trauma, attachment wounds, imposter syndrome, low self-esteem, dysfunctional relationships, and repressed sexuality, as a result of internalized cultural and societal messages they were exposed to that have further perpetuated an oppressive narrative around who they are.

As LGBTQ minorities, we often find ourselves wondering "where is my community?" and "why can't I just be myself?" It seems like we've tried everything but we don't feel like we belong or we are in a safe place to live & work. We often wonder... when is this going to get better? When can I just live my life fully how I am? Sometimes we feel sad and it can be a very lonely place. We can even forget just how special and unique we are because we are so different and surrounded by those who just "don't get it." We really want someone who can connect to us and make our experiences feel validated, reminding us that we are beautiful.

We use to have hard times whenever faced by difficulties that challenge our ego. Most of the time, we tend to avoid coping with these challenges, or we do deal with them in destructive ways, mainly because of not having learned more assertive functional ways to take care of ourselves, relationships and circumstances in life. My approach is focused on promoting your insight about why you think, feel and react the ways you do, supporting you to take advantage of your own potentials, improve skills and guiding you on taking good care of your core needs and expectations.

I wholeheartedly believe that you are your own expert on your life. Through therapy, my goal is to help you identify and work through the challenges and obstacles that may be standing in the way of gratifying relationships, a satisfying work life, and living the life you wish to lead. Your problems are not what define you as a person. I am interested in helping you clearly express your strengths, hopes, and values, which may have become lost amidst life's struggles. I do my best to create a safe and supportive environment with warmth, respect, kindness, curiosity, and a little humor.

I've been a clinical psychologist for over 40 years. I have treated a broad range of clients during this time utilizing hu manistic and psychodynamic approaches. My focus in therapy is with adults who struggle with a variety of personal issues including depression, anxiety, self-esteem and relationships. I am quite interested in the concerns that younger adults confront as well as those that individuals face as they transition into their mid-life years including aging, retirement, sexuality, illness, and loss. I believe that I can help clients gain greater clarity as they work to resolve these issues in an atmosphere of support and warmth.

I was a creative professional in film and television for many years before I became a psychotherapist.
Just as we learn spoken language as children, we learn an unspoken language of relationship. Just as the words we hear become the words we speak, the way we're treated becomes the basis for how we treat others, and how we expect to be treated by the people in our lives. We learn to define ourselves according to the terms by which we were defined, but most of us suspect that there's more to the story. There is.

I believe no two people are alike and my approach is eclectic, deriving from many different modalities to better serve my client's needs. My style integrates hu manistic, mindfulness and problem solving. We all have the ability to heal from anything life throws our way and I'm here to assist in uncovering your healing potential. My way of looking at therapy is simple, people come to me because they're experiencing some kind of pain. I help them come to terms with what that pain is, where it's coming from and how to manage and heal it.

We often forget that our first experience of the world is a shared one; that by nature we are relational beings. Which is why therapy can be so powerful. My job is to help you move away from the things that no longer work (perhaps never did), and toward a preferred way of being. Our process together is one of discovery & transformation, and honors both what you are and what you are becoming. You and I will collaborate to create an environment that is safe and supportive (I don't do that alone -- only you know what is safe). Through compassion & curiosity, our therapy will find new narratives and make meaning of old ones.

When considering my patients, I take a holistic approach and assess from a bio/psycho/social/spiritual point-of-view. I believe assessing the whole patient is the best way to understand underlying problems/symptoms related to psychopathology. Most importantly, empathy, trust, a therapeutic alliance and rapport is of utmost concern; I want your therapy hour to be useful, beneficial, and enjoyable.

I offer short and long term treatment of distressing psychological symptoms. Common symptoms include attentional difficulties, debilitating anxiety, lack of energy/motivation, overwhelming sadness and anger, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, and psychosomatic symptoms. These symptoms often emerge in response to life transitions, intergenerational family dynamics, identity crisis, difficult or traumatic past events, racial trauma, or the loss of a relationship. An additional focus of my practice centers around issues of racial and ethnic identity, navigating interracial relationships, and immigration related issues.

To change or not to change? One of the most frustratingly hu man experiences in life is wanting to change for the better only to find yourself repeating the same ineffective patterns and mistakes. This is where counseling can come into play. By understanding your own motivations and the internal barriers getting in the way of change, you can develop new strategies to know yourself better and develop tools to handle the challenges and stressors of life. My practice is strength-based, client-centered, motivational, and grounded in cognitive behavioral ideas.

What can be promised is, this is the safe and judge-free space where I, also a vulnerable and sensitive hu man as you are, could work together, feel pain together, rejoice and thrive together.
For the last 25 years, I have been working as a psychotherapist in various types of fields in both Korea and the US. Throughout those years as a bilingual therapist, I have worked with many diverse clients with different ethnic or socio-economic backgrounds, ages and issues, which obligates me to be always humble and careful given the depth of impact people could experience by sharing their pain and joy with trusted someone in a safe and caring environment.

As we commemorate National Grief Awareness Day on August 30, here are three warning signs of unresolved loss and grief. Are you suffering from any of these? 1) One of the most common symptoms is isolation. When people are shut off from others, anger, sadness and depression begin to interfere with our thinking processes. 2) Incomplete recovery over a lifetime creates unhappiness. When losses pile up, often beginning in childhood, we lock our hearts away. We look for relief through distractions. 3) Reactions become disproportionate. People who blow up at the slightest thing are often those who have not resolved inner pain.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
