I believe in an active process between client and therapist where you can attain new perspectives on your life's challenges and transitions. Sometimes we are aware of difficulties we face, but need a safe environment to create the changes necessary. Our work will include unveiling the valuable gifts that your unconscious holds for you and looking at how your beliefs may be restricting you. I utilize different therapeutic approaches and tools to help you see and experience situations through different lenses. This enables you to make new and healthier decisions and live a more vital and fulfilling life.

As a director of multiple facilities, being a professor, writing books, and presenting treatment modalities across this country, I missed why I came into this field over 20 years ago. Working 1-on-1 with patients and changing and improving lives is my primary objective. As of August 2021, I am back providing individual sessions and look forward to working with you.

Our lives are constructed from many roles and stories. We, as human beings, are the teller of those tales. Is your narrative one, as Plato stated, flowing from "three sources: desire, emotion, and knowledge?" Is it rich in self-care, dignity, and compassion? Or, are the stories and thoughts you carry heartless, punitive, or corrosive?

Feelings of stress, anxiety, depression, and grief are part of life, but when they begin to interfere with relationships or daily life, it may be time to seek support. I work with my clients to confront all of life’s difficulties with confidence, navigating their challenges with curiosity, trust, and understanding while cultivating resilience. Together, we will create a relationship that fosters curiosity and reframe old narratives while honing your personal strengths. I work with adults to help them lessen their burdens and embrace their newfound freedom using a blend of theoretical orientations.

In a rapidly changing and evolving world, it may sometimes feel challenging to preserve your peace and strength. Therapy is the choice to slow down and give yourself time to reflect on what parts of yourself need compassion, acceptance, or movement to change. My aim is to empathetically and non judgmentally align with you to enliven your purpose and desires. I utilize the therapeutic relationship to foster connection and explore resiliency and attunement with the self. In working with adolescent and adult clients, I meet you where you are respectfully and provide support to help you grow towards personal goals.

I understand that life's transitions often come with the obvious changes in ones perspective, in ones relationships, and in ones lifestyle, but transitions also come with more hidden emotional changes. These usually surface as sleepless nights, fights with people you care about, mood instability, and a feeling of sadness or dissatisfaction with life. On your own, it is difficult to untangle the complex puzzle that underlies these ongoing issues and acknowledge these emotional changes. Together we can uncover the root of your emotional challenges using emotionally focused therapy in a compassionate and supportive environment.

Being a woman in America in 2024 is not easy. A mentor of mine once said that she did not envy my experience as a woman today. She grew up in a different time, a time when she was expected to be a good mother for her children and a responsible homemaker for her husband. Today, beyond these roles, there is a subtle, quiet undercurrent of expectations including, but by no means limited to, being a “good” wife, sister, friend, and neighbor (what does “good” mean anyway?), a career woman, an impromptu party host with a meticulous home, and a selfless volunteer in the community, all while maintaining a size 2 figure.

Starting therapy can be both exciting and relieving, as well as initially daunting. Many people avoid therapy for fear of judgement, not thinking their issues are "that bad", or are afraid of facing themselves. When there's avoidance or lack of help, these problems tend to keep getting worse. I believe that therapy is all about creating a safe, compassionate, non-judgmental space where we can work together to help you shift your mindset, make better choices, and improve aspects of your life that may not be working. My approach is all about working as a team to help you reach your personal goals.

Treatment is a step-by step- discovery. I work with a psychodynamic approach that encourages a more mindful understanding of how our past may influence our present. Our work together supports deeper personal growth and balance in mind body and spirit. I encourage conscious rather than automatic living by assisting clients to overcome past difficulties and traumas to grow to a new full potential of their choice. I have a unique ability to connect with clients that have multiple stressors and life changing events guiding them to embrace change and create a new view of life.

I use a collaborative, empathic, strengths-based approach to psychotherapy, respecting each person’s autonomy and personal choices as they work towards achieving their goals in therapy. Therapy is individually tailored to each client, while taking into account various factors such as the client’s personality, presenting problems, and expressed preferences. Treatment may also focus on improving relationships with others, occupational and/or academic functioning, and, most notably, your relationship with yourself.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
