My approach is evidence-based, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Family Systems Therapy, to address issues including substance abuse, anxiety, depression, disruptive behaviors in children, parenting concerns, low self-esteem, separation/divorce, domestic violence, and life transitions.
I am both a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California, Washington, and Texas, and an attorney licensed to practice in California and Washington. I use a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach as a counselor to promote personal growth, healing, and empowerment. I am passionate about working with children, adults, couples, and families. I believe a strong therapeutic alliance between the therapist and the client is critical to effective treatment, and central to building and maintaining that alliance is trust. Paramount to my practice is creating a space where clients can feel safe.

This therapeutic coaching and support allows parents the ability to practice and build their own “muscle memory” for effective, and truly rewarding parenting.
It’s easy for parents to be overwhelmed with the non-stop demands of parenting. When a child displays behaviors such as defiance, temper tantrums, aggression, impulsivity, etc, it can feel unbelievably stressful. My approach is to partner with parents to guide them in, first, developing the skills to enhance their bond with their child. During therapeutic coaching sessions, the parent has the opportunity to develop mastery of skills in a calm, non-threatening format while the child plays with toys, with my guidance and support. This approach is well researched and successful.

I also have personal experience of parenting neurodivergent children (special needs) and being a caregiver.
It's exhausting to feel overwhelmed! Some days it feels like one more thing will push you over the edge. While you know that the constant state of stress is not healthy, you don't know what other options you have with everything that's on your plate. It could be from the stress of parenting, being a caregiver for a loved one, or just a life that feels unmanageable. It often feels impossible to appreciate or enjoy what you have because you are stuck with too much to handle on any given day. You know there's another way, but you haven't been able to consistently get there. You are frustrated and tired of feeling this way.

Parenting is hard, and it’s painful to see your child struggling.
Are typical parenting strategies no longer working, leaving you in need of guidance? Perhaps your child experiences anxiety, and you're feeling unsure about how to best support them. Or maybe your child needs help building social skills. You might be looking for ways to set boundaries or ensure you and your partner are on the same page. These challenges are completely normal. Parenting doesn’t come with a manual, and children often struggle to manage their emotions. They may not yet have the language to express their wants and needs, which can lead to frustration and behavioral issues. I’m here to help you navigate these challenges.

Parenting and growing up can be tough, and no amount of training can prepare us for all of its challenges.
Are you struggling in your relationships with others, or with how you view yourself? Do you have problems at work, or are you grappling with a loss? Many times we may feel unhappy, or bland but are not clear about the causes and what we can do. Personal growth is a lifelong process, and at times, choosing to embark in a psychotherapeutic relationship can help. We all have the capacity to better understand ourselves and improve our lives. In our work together, you would begin to understand the relationship you have with yourself and how you navigate other relationships.

My areas of specialization include: Emotionally focused therapy for Marital and Couples treatment, Gottman treatment of Couples, anxiety, stress management, eating disorders: parenting issues, adolescents, alcoholism, and adult children of alcoholics.
Looking for a psychologist is difficult. It is important to find someone who is a close match with your needs. I approach therapy with an active style, providing direct feedback in a supportive manner. For more than thirty years, I have been successfully helping individuals and couples through Emotionally Focused Therapy, find greater enjoyment in life. For therapy to work, I believe that the therapist needs to care about, and feel connected to, the individuals he or she works with. Psychotherapy is not just a job; helping people get better and live their life in a fuller happier way is something I strive for.

My background includes additional training in psychopharmacology, neuroscience, language-based learning differences, including dyslexia and processing disorders, ADHD, supportive parent coaching and high conflict relationships.
Hello! I work with adults, adolescents and families. I believe we all have unique, innate strengths that we can rely upon to get us through tough situations but that sometimes it is hard for us to find them on our own. I work with my clients to uncover and support each individual's own innate strengths while integrating a variety of research-based interventions to reduce anxiety, improve mood, process trauma, and improve relationships.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
