We are not so much defined by what happens to us in life, but rather by how we respond to what happens. Intuitively we may know problems are opportunities to change and to grow, but sometimes we feel stuck, anxious and disempowered. Please know emotional pain is the only thing in life likely to jump-start a process of personal transformation. You are likely on the threshold of making that inward turn--taking yourself more seriously by addressing the pain of the past, accepting responsibility for prior choices and formulating commitments to do some things differently from here forward.

Whether you're struggling with consequences stemming from past trauma, chronic mental illness, grief/loss, hopelessness, anger, resentment or profound life changes; healing is possible. Therapy is the process of building insight and awareness into behaviors and thoughts that ultimately perpetuate the hurt and pain. My goal is to assist in you finding the best way to break this pattern, change old and ineffective ways of coping and building a better understanding of why we do what we do. We often are trying to make right or whole, something that was so broken, destroyed or distorted from our past.

You don’t have to go it alone. I am here to help you find your way back to living the life you want. It can happen. I'm here every step of the way. Because sometimes, things don’t turn out the way we planned. We didn’t know we would end up getting divorced, or blending families, or being a single parent, but here we are. We didn’t know we would adopt instead of birthing our own child, or be raising our grandchildren, or the difficulties we would face raising children in an LGBTQ home. But, here we are. These challenges can cause tremendous anxiety, depression, anger, guilt, confusion, sadness, and suffering. I understand.

I am a Life Coach, Psychotherapist, and published author with 25 years of experience. My methods are unconventional, so you may expect exceptional results from our work together. I understand the real challenges people face because I've faced them, not just read about them. Of course I treat all of the standard "disorders" my colleagues list in their websites, but the real alchemy is in the transformation from your current situation, to the extraordinary one you have envisioned! I am the author of a book called, Tactical Boundaries: How to Make All of Your Relationships Work For You. Available on amazon.com & barnesandnoble.com

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
