For over 25 years I have been helping people when their lives have become painful, deadened, upsetting, or when unexpected events disrupted their lives. I will join with you to help tolerate immediate concerns, to develop effective techniques for you, and if you want, explore further possibilities for more satisfying relationships and life. I'm experienced in both brief, solution-focused therapy, and exploratory deep therapy. I offer clients an empathic, collaborative and individually-focused therapeutic relationship: the surprising paradox of relationship is how we become more true to ourselves by fully being with someone else.

When you feel stuck; upset over a recent difficulty; or shaken by trauma whether it be a car accident, wildfire, pandemic or a divorce...you need to talk and get support, and you need real clinical help and healing. My therapy approach covers both the present time problems you face, and quickly sorts out any historical patterns that may be driving your behavior in ways that are no longer working. I have specific training in EMDR trauma therapy which resolves both large (like abuse and accidents) and small traumas ("mini traumas" that happen in every day life). Anxiety, panic, depression can all be moved through with therapy.

You’re exhausted. You work hard to keep the people in your life happy, but you can’t help but feel unfulfilled, overwhelmed and unappreciated yourself. So, you try harder and give more, but it doesn’t feel like you’ll ever be enough. You keep up the façade that everything’s okay, but beneath the surface, you feel stuck in a prison of chronic guilt, worry and self-criticism. The constant swallowing of your own truth for others’ approval has left you empty. And the truth is, its lonely in there where no one sees the real you.

We are all experiencing life: the good, the bad, and the painful. Whether we are chasing lofty goals or responding to complex responsibilities, stress and frustration broach our lives and create dysregulation in our bodies. This physiological dysregulation can lead to anxiety and depression, significantly impacting daily life. As William James stated, “The great thing, then, in all education, is to make our nervous system our ally instead of our enemy.”

Group therapy for women who divorce later in life; widows and widowers; and family caregivers of an older relative or friend is available.
One doesn't plan for a late in life divorce; the death of a spouse or becoming a caregiver to an elderly parent or friend. These late life transitions have become common for people in their 50's and upwards - leaving many feeling alone, afraid, unsupported and inadequate. The need to "reinvent" and "redefine" who you are now can be paralyzing. As a therapist with an extensive background in grief and loss, we will explore the "unknown" together; define your strengths and personal goals; and remove barriers to finding meaning at any age.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
