My area of expertise is individual therapy with children and adolescents who exhibit severe behaviors such as verbal and physical aggression, property destruction, resistance to authority ( oppositional/defiant behaviors), self-injurious behaviors, and AWOL.
Family in crisis? Everyone in the family is impacted by the stressful environment when children refuse to follow directions and develop behaviors such as verbal aggression (disrespectful communication, degrading comments, verbally threaten others), emotional outbursts (yelling, temper tantrums), physical aggression toward self (i.e., cutting and/or burning self) or others (pushing and/or hitting others, destroying property), suicidal ideation (threat to self) and/or homicidal ideation (threat to others), and/or running away (AWOL). As a result of feelings of sadness and anger, children and parents often engage in power struggles.

Welcome to my practice. I have been in practice since 2007 and have been featured on ABC, NBC, and KCAL as an expert psychologist. I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up. These men are often in crisis when we first meet. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, financial recklessness, gambling, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, and relational conflicts. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

Every time you talk to your parent you feel invalidated. They’ve always been difficult to deal with, and no matter what you try, each interaction leaves you feeling helpless, overwhelmed, anxious, and angry. You get mad at yourself for getting all worked up. Why can’t you just get over it?! Let things go, everyone says. Yes, growing up with them was hard. You know they were not a perfect parent, and you don’t completely blame them - they grew up with abuse themselves. But, it still affects you? You have your own life, but still feel so hurt by everything that’s happened. You’re worried that it’s causing other problems too.

As a trauma-informed systemic therapist, I take a collaborative and humanistic approach as I provide psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and families. To better understand an individual's worldview, meeting them where they are, understanding their perspectives, and presenting issues that have brought them to seek therapy is vital. Connecting with people through a humanistic approach allows us to comprehend one another through fundamental connections we share, such as emotions and sensations. Through collaboration and authenticity, I utilize myself as a tool through dynamic conversations and applying skills to encourage change.

Life could be thought of as a journey with many challenges, twists, turns, and peak experiences. Therapy is a personal investment we make in our self It can be a part of our life journey where we get to know and understand our self and others, and find the true meaning and purpose of our life. It can afford a person an opportunity to outgrow insecurities, discover his or her strength and become the best person you can possibly be. Therapy is for everyone a place to learn and grow.

Oppositional Defiance (ODD) Therapists
What is the most effective treatment for oppositional defiant disorder?
The treatment of Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) will involve multiple approaches designed to help both the youngster and their parents, sometimes including medication. A therapist will help a child learn ways to regulate their emotions, curb their impulsiveness, and counteract anger, defiance, and disruption, while showing parents ways to bring these lessons into their home. A technique designed for children with conditions like ODD, known as Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS), may also be used. CPS addresses a child’s concerns and rewards appropriate responses while discouraging harsh punishment or criticism.
How does treatment for oppositional defiant disorder work?
Treatment for ODD addresses the issues underlying a child’s defiance and disruption, the emotional regulation and impulse-control skills they lack, and the way adults respond to them. ODD therapy is based on the idea that children with the disorder understand the difference between right and wrong, that they want to behave well, and that, with help, they can. By responding to the child with empathy instead of harsh criticism, ignoring nonviolent behaviors, and rewarding positive actions, a therapist, and the other adults in a child’s life, can help children improve their behavior.
How long does therapy for oppositional defiant disorder take?
Therapy for oppositional defiant disorder is not a short-term undertaking. Depending on the severity of a child’s symptoms, their age, the presence of other conditions like ADHD, anxiety or a mood disorder, and their family dynamic, it can take months before improvement is noted. The cooperation of parents and teachers is crucial, because the skills learned in therapy must be practiced in real-world situations, with all their potential triggers.
Does oppositional defiant disorder go away?
ODD can remit following treatment. ODD is often diagnosed in nursery school, and early intervention is essential for a positive prognosis. In two-thirds of children, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, symptoms resolve within three years.
