People come to my office with a variety of concerns related to relationships, identity, spirituality, career, self-development, or life purpose. Others may be seeking relief from trauma response patterns, anxiety or depression. In a rapidly changing and tumultuous world, people often feel comforted by the presence of a therapist who can provide a safe enough space to understand themselves, resolve conflicts, and live with more coherence and freedom from unfulfilling relational patterns. I listen with an intuitive and compassionate heart and give you tools to navigate through stressful times with greater resiliency and embodiment.

Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. So why therapy now? What are your hopes and dreams for the future? Problems only survive when they are supported by particular beliefs and principles. This can feel like a relentless need to escape a moment that never ends. Exploring the details and effects of these obstacles will help lead to different outcomes not yet discovered.

Relationships are everything––our relationship to ourselves, our relationship to others and to the world around us. We have an immense capacity to heal in relationship and in the right conditions we can grow and thrive. The famed psychologist Carl Jung wrote that we, “walk in shoes too small," meaning we limit our own potential, whether we are conscious of it or not. In that sense, the work of therapy is to broaden ourselves and fully embody the potential that awaits each of us. We aim to skillfully and artfully help you through whatever it is that brings you here to both surrender and grow into a more full and satisfying life.

My ideal client is a dedicated professional who feels overwhelmed by long hours and too many tasks, and especially being "on call". On-call means you can't schedule your rest periods, and disrupted sleep is very bad for health and well being. You may also feel unfairly manipulated by management as they try to meet unreasonable demands. You may think "Why don't they hire more people?" Nurses, for example, are often stuck in this situation. I have been able to aid these staff in getting time off, or going part time with no on-call with a guarantee of getting their job back when they're ready with no retailiation.

I use attachment-focused EMDR, Buddhist philosophy, EFT, and IFS to inform my relational approach.
Years ago, on my 30th birthday, I walked home from my party alone. I had a great night with friends, flirted with a girl at the bar, but I had a feeling, a gnawing sensation, that there was something better out there. I had a vague feeling that what I needed was a loving partnership, and it was up to me to prioritize finding it. Eventually I found my way to therapy, and with a nurturing but challenging therapist, I began to realize how I defended myself from the intimacy I wanted. It was the most humbling and most rewarding thing I've ever done.

I also incorporate years of Buddhist practice and eastern philosophy, moving meditation, art, breathwork, spirituality, mindfulness into work with clients should they feel like any of that is of interest to them.
I am not a typical therapist. I see myself as a co-author, witness, helpful ally, teammate, collaborator and useful resource. Rather than taking a role as an “expert” by making assumptions or interpretations about your life, I love to use skillful conversation and artful question-asking to help you get past obstacles and problems. You are here on this page because you have strength in you, you have desire in you and you have healing in you. You are the main character in your own life. Therapy can either help or hinder the development of this character as someone powerful, capable and whole.

I have been a committed Buddhist practitioner since 2003 and have extensive retreat experience in the major schools of Buddhist meditation as well as education and experience in secular mindfulness practice.
Just as we learn spoken language as children, we learn an unspoken language of relationship. Just as the words we hear become the words we speak, the way we're treated becomes the basis for how we treat others, and how we expect to be treated by the people in our lives. We learn to define ourselves according to the terms by which we were defined, but most of us suspect that there's more to the story. There is.

Though I work with most issues, I specialize in helping people recover from complex trauma. People with narcissistic, abusive, or neglectful parents or partners sometimes develop issues with trusting themselves, have difficulty maintaining close relationships, struggle with an inner critic, vacillate often between depression and anxiety, lack a solid sense of identity, or feel a sense of emptiness when their lives seem great on paper. Sometimes that trauma can even become part of one's identity - I work with clients to build insight, boundaries, self-compassion, and acceptance to free themselves from it & live more fulfilling lives.

Feeling like you’re tied up in knots? You might need to go beyond talk therapy to find freedom. In a world that often tells us who to be, it can be tempting to mold ourselves into who we think we should be rather than embracing who we truly are. The relentless self doubts- that we are not good enough, that we are too much, or that we don’t matter at all- can make us feel trapped, creating a barrier between our true selves and the life we want to live. By focusing on the connection between the mind and body, I offer a integrative path to unraveling stuckness, mending old wounds and restoring your sense of aliveness and wellbeing.

Buddhist Therapists

Is buddhism beneficial for mental health?

While Buddhism itself is not a treatment for mental health conditions, its practices can greatly enhance mental well-being by introducing coping skills and ideas that promote overall wellness. Key Buddhist practices, such as mindfulness, have been shown to alleviate symptoms of various mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, addiction, and trauma. Moreover, Buddhism's focus on self-compassion, non-judgment, and acceptance can benefit individuals with particularly negative or self-critical thought patterns.

What are the concepts and principles of buddhism as a therapeutic approach?

Core Buddhist principles are often used in therapy to help clients gain insight into their thoughts and emotions. Concepts such as suffering (dukkha) and impermanence (anicca) are applied to help clients recognize that common forms of suffering, like repetitive negative thought patterns, can be accepted and viewed as impermanent. The Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path are additional core concepts utilized frequently in Buddhist therapy sessions. The Four Noble Truths highlight the existence of suffering as an inherent part of the human experience—an insight frequently used to move clients toward greater acceptance. The Eightfold Path, which includes right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right concentration, and right mindfulness, offers practical skills to alleviate suffering.

What is the buddhist approach and practice during a therapy session?

Therapists informed by Buddhist principles often integrate mindfulness and meditation practices into therapy sessions to help clients cultivate greater acceptance, compassion, and non-judgment toward themselves and others. Typically, Buddhist therapists guide clients through mindfulness exercises, such as breathing exercises or body scans, and encourage them to practice similar exercises outside of sessions. Additionally, many Buddhist therapists utilize elements of Positive Psychology or Compassion-Focused Therapy, which can help reduce symptoms of self-criticism and shame common among clients with various mental health conditions. In general, Buddhist therapists strive to embody the compassion and non-judgmental approach they promote, often incorporating exercises aimed at developing compassion in session, such as loving-kindness meditation (Metta).

Is mindfulness the same as buddhism in the context of therapy?

While Buddhist therapists frequently integrate mindfulness practices into therapy sessions, the terms mindfulness and Buddhism are not synonymous in the context of therapy. Therapists may use mindfulness techniques, such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), without identifying as a Buddhist therapist. In contrast, those practicing within a Buddhist belief framework typically encourage mindfulness therapies, in addition to foundational Buddhist beliefs, such as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. These therapists may also guide clients toward a deeper understanding of Buddhist philosophy, unlike those who use Buddhist mindfulness principles without the broader spiritual context.
