Hello. My name is Kent and I specialize in helping kids, teens and their families live happier lives. I am an expert at bridging the communication gap between parents and kids. Is your teen angry or sullen? Slamming his fist through the wall? Screaming her lungs out at you because you are so unfair? How about your little kid? Is he having problems making friends? Perhaps your little girl can't concentrate in school. Maybe there is a tragedy in the family, such as a death, divorce or sudden illness. If so, I'd like to help.

To the benefit of growth and healing for every client, regardless of issues, needs or goals, are readiness, willingness, vulnerability and transparency. The more we are curious about ourselves, the better we can learn. The more we learn about ourselves, the better we can understand. The more we understand about ourselves, better we can evolve and take care, both of ourselves and others.

Earning a doctorate has given me tools for facilitating a deeper connection with the individuals I work with. This includes the non-verbal communication that passes between us, allowing emotions and trauma to process through the body, and creating a non-judgmental space where you can explore your personal challenges with my support. The goal of working in this psychodynamic, explorative way is to create a deep level of healing and change, so you are able to move beyond the fear and resistance that may be holding you back. Please look at my website for more information about me: https://www.woodlandhillstherapy.net

Our world is a tough place right now. Many of us are struggling with anxiety, stress and depression. It's hard to turn on the tv or look at social media without seeing news that grows more tragic each day. This can impact everything we do- parenting, connecting with our spouses, work, and even day to day living. Anxious thoughts can make it difficult to sleep or concentrate. We can feel disconnected and alone. If you are overwhelmed and you know you need help but you aren't sure where to turn, please know that you don't have to do this alone. Please reach out for a free consult. Telehealth openings available immediately.

In today's world being a woman can be joyful, beautiful and also incredibly overwhelming! Life transitions, career decisions, moving, infertility, pregnancy, parenting, changing body and personal identity, juggling work and family responsibilities may lead us to feeling anxious, overwhelmed, lonely, lost or stuck. I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience specializing in anxiety, depression, maternal mental health, women’s issues, life transitions, and parenting. Through my experience, I’ve learned to base my practice around what science calls the negativity bias. This is the notion that when we struggle, we are neurobiologically wired to make sense of our struggle by creating a negative story around it. The negativity bias often keeps us feeling defeated, broken and not good enough.

I particularly work with highly sensitive people, trauma, parenting, and attachment issues.
Welcome! I work with clients that are seeking contentment, authenticity, and connection in their daily life. In our work together, you can expect a balance of exploring the past and present. Empowered with this knowledge, we will explore your values in the present and develop skills that help you both cope with life as it is and create life as you want it to be. I utilize attachment and systems-based orientations in conjunction with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help clients heal and experience their lives more fully.

Besides psychotherapy, I provide parent training, child custody mediation, and work in a multidisciplinary team as a divorce coach and child expert in the collaborative divorce process to prevent emotional damage to all parties going through divorce, especially children.
As a cognitive-behavioral therapist, I believe that people's emotions and behaviors are influenced by their perceptions and interpretation of events. I work collaboratively with my clients in a proactive manner in order for them to learn effective strategies that they can use for the rest of their lives. I also believe that we are influenced by the cultural context in which we grow up. All relationships are, to some extent, are contextual and intercultural. People often face new challenges as they go through transitions in their lives. I bring my life experiences and professional knowledge to therapy.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
