Earning a doctorate has given me tools for facilitating a deeper connection with the individuals I work with. This includes the non-verbal communication that passes between us, allowing emotions and trauma to process through the body, and creating a non-judgmental space where you can explore your personal challenges with my support. The goal of working in this psychodynamic, explorative way is to create a deep level of healing and change, so you are able to move beyond the fear and resistance that may be holding you back. Please look at my website for more information about me: https://www.woodlandhillstherapy.net

I'm trained in EMDR which is a cutting-edge treatment for trauma.
Hello, my name is Michele Ryan. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who loves working with individuals, families and couples who have been affected by mental illness or just the everyday stressors and strains of life. Sometimes it can be very difficult to get relief from emotional problems on our own. Too often, when we feel discouraged, angry, stressed out and overwhelmed and we can turn to unhealthy coping skills. I have worked with clients struggling with chemical and behavioral addictions, depression, multiple anxiety disorders, PTSD and ongoing difficulties due to past traumatic experiences and life stressors.

I use EMDR, IFS and other somatic therapies to support clients in healing from traumas and other adverse life events.
Many of us are often waiting to feel good....waiting for the weekend, waiting for a better job, waiting for a relationship, waiting for a problem to resolve itself. So much of life is missed out on during these waiting periods. I can help you uncover what's getting in the way of reaching your goals, whatever it may be. On this journey, you will develop more of a capacity to experience joy, improve your relationships and above all, change the relationship you have with yourself.

In my practice, I focus on walking with clients through some of the most difficult events in their lives. Whether you've considered an experience “traumatic” or not, if it still haunts you or causes you uncomfortable physical responses like a racing heart or nausea, these can be treated with EMDR or Brainspotting.I, myself, am a trauma survivor, which is why I became a counselor/coach in the first place. I want to help others heal as I have. Utilizing modalities such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can unlock sensations of safety, clarity and freedom in life.

We can utilize EMDR to understand and break through old patterns.
The stress, anxiety, and stuckness are overwhelming at times. This isn’t where you thought you’d be at this point in life. Watching others who seem to have it together, and doing the comparison game isn’t helping. It’s scary, and seriously disappointing. How can you get unstuck when it’s so hard to trust yourself to make the right decisions?

In EMDR therapy, we can safely begin to heal the pain and grief that led to this "shell" and begin to trust ourselves, others and the world.
Are you locked in patterns of drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, insomnia, infidelity, mood or thought disorders? As an empathic therapist, I utilize EMDR within a family systems approach. My life's work is helping people uncover and target problematic patterns. Once patterns are uncovered, we take simple steps toward change. If you struggle with ADHD, Asperger's or learning differences, I would like to help you construct the right niche, where you can be successful and happy, feeling supported and understood. Changes made in therapy are rewarding. I want to be part of your change process.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
