As we begin to focus on specific problems and possible interventions, cognitive behavioral therapy, attachment theory insights into relationship styles, “inner child” integration techniques, clinical hypnosis, and biofeedback are among the approaches and techniques that I rely on to design interventions.
I'm Dr. Ray Coffin, a Southern California psychologist with over 30 years of experience helping people get their lives back in balance when it's gotten to be too much to handle alone. If that sounds like you and what's worked for you in the past just isn't cutting it anymore, let's talk! I provide a confidential place to sort out what's not working in your life. We'll work together to clarify what you have the power to change, reinforce skills critical to your success, and support you as you build the confidence you need to make those changes.

With a background in health/medical psychology and biofeedback, I focus on mind-body health and chronic pain/illness management.
Therapy with me is a place of active change. I help people manage stress and reduce overwhelm, strengthen relationships, build resilience, and move from "stuckness" into growth. My patients come to me to shift thinking styles, improve communication, and increase productivity. I use evidence-based practices (such as CBT and mindfulness) to enhance self-awareness, build skills, and achieve targeted goals. We also explore core beliefs and behavior patterns to deepen self-understanding. With couples, my work is informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy and Gottman research. My office is located in a beautiful, peaceful marina setting.

I use Lazarus' multimodal approach, Wilber’s integral theory, Gorski/CBT, transpersonal/Buddhist psychology, family systems, EMDR, biofeedback and other technologies that may aid in Recovery.
For 25 years, I have assisted people with a variety of addictions, from the exogenous abuse of drugs and alcohol, to the ones that stem from the chemicals already inside the brain, such as sex and love addiction, abandonment patterns, sexual compulsions, gambling, internet, and workaholism. Unlike most psychotherapists, I’m a Board Certified Addiction Specialist, well versed in both abstinence and harm reduction strategies. Unlike most addiction professionals, I am also psychotherapist who also treats the anxiety, depression, and other psychological issues that often manifest after being uncovered through recovery.

I am experience in various mind-body therapies that include: Mindfulness, Hypnosis, Biofeedback, and EMDR.
As human beings we learn, develop meaning, and create a sense of purpose through each other and the relationships we form. In the same spirit I believe the therapeutic process is driven by the relationship formed between the client and the therapist. This is why my approach in therapy is guided by the question - "How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for their personal growth?" I strive to create an empathic, nonjudgmental atmosphere where you feel safe and empowered to work toward personal growth and creating lasting change; forming trust and leaning toward vulnerability.

Included in much of my work are brain fitness training techniques, biofeedback and discretionary tools patients may use at home for self-regulation.
Accessing hope, grounding, greater energy, and newfound peace are my specialities and passion, and I assist the patient to take charge in finding harmony and illuminating a vibrant life. Working creatively and eclectically, I emphasize psychophysiology and integrative modalities, the medical end of psychology in my practice, Lifetime Development in Pleasanton, California. Assessing carefully the unique strengths and needs of each child, adolescent, and adult who calls, my goal is to assist clients to become more masterful in their lives at every age. Using the lens of in-depth traditional psychotherapeutic knowledge, I aim for faster outcomes than those possible with "talk therapy" alone.

You are struggling. Your life isn't what you want it to be. We can help! We specialize in anxiety, depression, couples issues, addictions, sleep problems, concussion, ADD, and trauma. We are friendly and goal-oriented. I have 20 years experience working with adults, teens, and children. And, if you wish, we can also integrate neurofeedback training into our work together. Neurofeedback uses the EEG (which neurologists also use) to teach you to change brainwave patterns that keep you from being your best. I studied Neurofeedback at San Francisco State University, and am Board Certified in Biofeedback.

Biofeedback Therapists

Can biofeedback help with anxiety?

Biofeedback is often used to treat anxiety, including generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Anecdotal evidence and some research studies have found that it can improve symptoms of these disorders, sometimes significantly; however, studies on biofeedback have typically been small and researchers have cautioned that many have significant limitations, such as limited follow-up or a lack of a control group.

Is biofeedback evidence-based?

There is some evidence that biofeedback can effectively treat certain conditions; for example, its efficacy in treating headaches and urinary incontinence is generally thought to be well-established. There is also promising, but less conclusive, evidence that it can aid in stroke recovery or help someone manage a mental health disorder such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD.

What is the difference between biofeedback and neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback that measures brain activity specifically; it is typically used to treat psychological or neurodevelopmental concerns such as ADHD, depression, insomnia, or autism spectrum disorder. Biofeedback is a broader category that, in addition to neurofeedback, also includes electromyogram, heart rate variability, and thermal biofeedback, each of which measures a particular physiological function (muscle activity, heart rate, and skin temperature, respectively)

What are the limitations of biofeedback?

While biofeedback may be helpful for certain conditions, its efficacy is less assured for others, such as high blood pressure. People with certain health conditions such as heart arrhythmia may not be able to benefit from biofeedback because their condition may interfere with the machines’ readings. Biofeedback can also be time-consuming and costly, and may not be covered by health insurance.
