I have a heart for clients of all ages and I believe it is never too early or too late to take any step in a positive direction. I have a passion for people with a history of trauma, abuse and/or addiction and I enjoy adolescents and adults alike. I believe that the one hour you devote to yourself during the therapy process will have a positive effect on the remaining 167 hours you will live during the week.

I hold certificates and specialized training in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy, and emotionally-focused couples therapy ( EFT).
My heart is to help individuals and couples work through experiences that have l eft them feeling disconnected and stuck in negative cycles of relating to themselves, others, and the world. Whether it is a single event, long history of challenges, or a seemingly sudden increase in anxiety, my hope is to provide a helping hand and a sense of safety that empower people to pursue the healing they desire. I am also passionate about assisting first responders and medical professionals as they work through job-related stress and trauma, as well as assisting young adults who feel overwhelmed and uncertain about what steps to take next.

In couples work, I use evidence-based concepts from The Gottman Method and EFT to provide tools to improve relating in concrete ways.
AAMFT Approved Supervisor Candidate: Supervising LMFT and LPC Resident Counselors. (Fairfaxcounseling.org) Specializing in Couples Counseling and youth/young adults, my commitment is to provide a non-judgmental atmosphere where we face hard issues to grow and find more peace in your life. Leaving shame at the door, we dig into what is keeping you "stuck" and find practical tools to move forward. The therapist-client relationship gives one freedom, maybe beyond any other setting, to be fully open, honest and press forward to the best version of yourself.

As James Baldwin famously said, "not everything that has been faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed unless faced", I also offer you the following poem: "When we feel safe, anything is possible. We become unstoppable. Because we have a firm ground to launch and a safe ground to land. We can then stand. Voice ourselves, show ourselves. Life becomes a dance." With over 15 years of experience carefully providing integrative therapy (e.g., CBT, EMDR, ACT, IFS, EFT, Mindfulness, biofeedback, neurofeedback) and therapeutic assessments, I am excited to work collaboratively with you!

Making the decision to attend therapy is difficult for most people. Regardless of what you are struggling with, the decision to ask for help is often very challenging. In reality, this choice is life changing. Life no longer has to be filled with depression, anxiety, traumatic memories, emotional numbing with substances, or coping skills that just seem like they are not working. Sometimes, we just need someone to listen. Collaboratively, we can strengthen your natural skills while implementing new ones. We can overcome the barriers that block you from having the motivation and energy to reach your personal goals.

How do I choose the right therapist for me? What if I don't like my therapist? Aren't all therapist the same? Research continues to show that good fit is the most important factor to a successful outcome and choosing the right clinical expert is fundamental. Not all clinicians are the same. Education, experience and clinical expertise are distinguishing factors. My long time practice focuses on treating individuals and couples who are addressing stress management, relationship satisfaction, anxiety, depression, trauma, or phase of life adjustment such as divorce, parenting, teen parent relationship or school/work challenges.

What if one session could make all the difference? You might have tried therapy before but felt like it was focused just on “coping”...not on actually getting to the root of the issue. You can't seem to shake the lingering feeling that, no matter what, you're just not good enough. You’re ready to go deep and put your anxiety, depression, trauma, and triggers to rest for good. Brainspotting (BSP) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) offer fast, gentle, and highly effective relief, without the need to talk about your problems in detail. It’s time to move past the triggers and patterns that have been holding you back far too long.

You’re exhausted. You work hard to keep the people in your life happy, but you can’t help but feel unfulfilled, overwhelmed and unappreciated yourself. So, you try harder and give more, but it doesn’t feel like you’ll ever be enough. You keep up the façade that everything’s okay, but beneath the surface, you feel stuck in a prison of chronic guilt, worry and self-criticism. The constant swallowing of your own truth for others’ approval has l eft you empty. And the truth is, its lonely in there where no one sees the real you.

My ideal clients are women, 18 and older, who tend to appear to others to “have it all together”. They can carry many responsibilities and can achieve a lot, sometimes making it seem easy on the outside. Internally, these women may feel anxious, overwhelmed, depressed, or exhausted. Sometimes they may struggle in their relationship with their own emotions, with their relationship with food or their bodies, or with alcohol. If you may be one of these women, my goal is to provide you with support, to help you be kinder to yourself, and to help you slow down to enjoy the life that you have created.

Yes! For making yourself a priority. The search may be daunting, but hang in there! You are worth the investment of energy, time & perseverance. Some of the reasons you may seek out a therapist? If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, stressed, or in need of healing. Sometimes one needs guidance or coaching for specific situations, or perhaps a neutral party from which to be truly heard. I offer a trusting environment to vent, heal, expand on coping skills, and make desired shifts. I have 20+ years of being in practice, and am grateful you took this time.

Most of the time we are able to meet life's challenges using our natural resources of life experience and supportive relationships. Sometimes more specialized help is needed. There may be patterns of behaviors or relationships that one feels stuck in, or fated to repeat over and over. In those instances I feel I offer a warm, steady, and skillfull hand in understanding the root causes of these distressing patterns, and guidance in how to be free of them...finally.

Just when you think you are getting used to one phase of life, the next one throws you a curve ball. Whether your life includes being single, adjusting to marriage or parenthood, raising a teen, children leaving the home, or adjusting to retirement, each phase brings plenty of unique challenges. Issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, and life dissatisfaction can seem like constant companions through it all. It can feel exhausting! Life should not be about working so hard yet feeling so flat!

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
