I work from a Gestalt approach, which is a process-oriented perspective that aims to restore and recover the parts of ourselves that were detached.
I’m here to witness your lived in experience. I believe that who you are is a culmination of having survived the pains of life and how you learned to get love. I don't feel the need to fix you but will push you to lean into your humanity by rediscovering the parts of yourself you had to abandon to receive love. I act as a mirror for you to see yourself more clearly, to realize that love has been and is already inside of you.

I specialize in emotions, relationships, self-esteem, and culture. I bring a warm approach to therapy, one informed by my experiences in Europe and Asia. I also supervise therapists in training. I became a therapist after discovering the meaning of fatherhood. I work with individuals, couples, and families. I integrate approaches that provide empathy, help regulate the nervous system, and deepen self-awareness. These bring direct relief with regards to the immediate stress associated with current issue(s) and long-term support with self-esteem, empowerment, quality of relationship, and meaning.

Hello, my name is Carissa Smith (LMFT130892). The therapeutic journey is the most important aspect of therapy, and I am always honored to assist clients with that journey in any way I can. People are complex, diverse, and interesting, and based on my experience, are just trying to do the best they can. I am comfortable with adult individuals (18+) across the lifespan. A true passion of mine is working with couples though.

My approach is eclectic drawing on my years of experience and extensive training in cognitive behavioral therapy, REBT, short-term psychodynamic therapy, object relations, gestalt, narrative adaptation, motivational interviewing and imago therapy.
Hello there! I am Dana Suzanne Fortier and am a licensed clinical social worker and registered nurse seeing clients in California via telehealth sessions. I believe in the power of good therapy to help all of us to live the rich and fulfilling lives we deserve. Too often people settle for less than their dreams and then quietly slip into a grey world of indifference and resignation. Or they find they have chased the wrong dreams and are uncertain about how to make the changes their hearts and minds demand. If this describes you, therapy with me can help you.

Life can be hard and sometimes we need time and space to pause, reflect, and grow. I enjoy providing a safe, warm, non-judgmental space for someone at whatever stage of life they are in. I think therapy should be tailored to suit ones individual needs so I enjoy being collaborative with my clients and figuring out how they can get the most out of their experience in therapy. I use a lot of different therapy modalities but some of my favorites are CBT, DBT, Narrative, Gestalt, and NLP.

I believe everyone should be able to express themselves free of judgment in a safe space. It is important to me that my clients feel validated and are able to share their story. I believe that you are the expert on yourself and together we can develop interventions to help in your therapeutic journey. Life is full of surprises and whereas some may be devastating no one should have to go through them alone.

Gestalt Therapists

What is gestalt therapy?

Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.

How does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.

How long does gestalt therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.

Does gestalt therapy work?

Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
