As a licensed therapist, I consider it a great privilege to be part of someone’s healing and growth, where they are free to be wholly human. I recognize that seeking therapy can have stigmas attached to it among some marginalized and minority communities. I am passionate about breaking through these stigmas and can uniquely understand coming from these communities myself as a Muslim and child of immigrants. I aim to provide therapy within a social justice framework that is holistic and trauma informed. I believe that the personal is political, and therefore, that therapy can not be inherently apolitical.

I believe therapy is a container for self-expression where you can show up exactly as you are. As a person with lived experience of being queer, Arab, Non-binary, and Muslim, I have seen first hand how difficult it is to find someone whose values align around the importance of community and is committed to a trauma-informed framework. Growing up in a world that constantly feeds us narratives such as “healing happens alone” and “we are solely responsible for the state of our own wellbeing” can be deeply challenging and frustrating. Together, we will dismantle the notion of isolation as a symbol of strength.

It is not uncommon to struggle with the relationships in our lives. Balancing the stressors of a personal life while being in a relationship or family system can be difficult. For my couples and families, it is my hope to offer a space where you can process the dynamics at play. I invite you to take a stance of curiosity, self-reflection, and complexity as we examine the significant factors of your lives. I know the frustration of having much love for our important people but struggling to get along or “coexist.”

You've got big dreams, yet self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy are stopping you from achieving the success and confidence you crave. It’s as though there’s an invisible weight dragging behind you, making it hard to move forward. You see other people leading purpose-driven lives, rich in financial, social, and relational fulfillment. And you so desperately want that, too. But every time you’re going to make a change or take a chance, that voice in your head pops up. “Don’t try it, what if you get rejected” it assures you. “You’re not good enough.” So, you stay hidden in place, growing more helpless and hopeless each day.

As a multiethnic, multicultural woman of color, child of an immigrant, and trauma-informed associate clinical social worker with a background in gender studies, I approach my work with an intersectional lens. I consider the whole human being as well as the various systems they are part of and the effect these systems have on a person’s life. It is important to me that I am mindful of how my client perceives the world and how the world perceives them. As a trauma-informed yoga instructor, I also consider how emotions can show up somatically.

It's never too late to understand yourself. If you can synchronize your heart and mind, you can harmonize your life. The therapeutic space I create is to help you learn about who you are as an individual and see your blind spots. Regardless if you're coming on your own or as a couple, the therapeutic work that we will be done is not just about solving problems. It’s primarily to help you figure out what's behind these issues and increase your self-worth along the way. Therapy is challenging, but can be fulfilling. The goal is to facilitate you in witnessing your life in the healthiest of ways as you become closer to your true self.

Hello! My name is Annu, and I am a therapist in San Francisco (and online). I work with immigrants and adult-children of immigrants....also known as Third Culture Kids (TCK) or First Generation Americans. I work with multi-cultural and multi-racial couples, many of whom are people of color. I work with successful, career-driven achievers. I belong to each of these demographics - my parents immigrated to the US in 1971, and I worked in the corporate world for nearly 2 decades, climbing the corporate ladder rapidly before pivoting my career by going back to school to study counseling psychology. I work virtually via Zoom or phone.

You’re a sensitive person who thinks and feels deeply about the world around you. Sometimes it’s hard to honor your boundaries. You’re often your own biggest critic. It may not have started with you. Perhaps you’re healing from a painful childhood, relationship, or experience that continues to impact your daily life in frustrating ways. You’re looking for a space to show up fully as yourself, set down masks, and work with the messiness of being human. You're ready to integrate your experiences and cultivate more ease in your life. Welcome, I’m so glad that you’re here.

Muslim Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist will be respectful of faith, race, sexual orientation, gender, age, disabilities, or anything that is relevant to an individual’s reasons for seeking therapy. This mental health practitioner will therefore be able to recognize the role of faith in a client’s life, and they can appreciate the cultural values and beliefs of others. Cultural sensitivity on the part of the therapist may enhance the possibility of a strong therapeutic bond, even if the clinician does not have an extensive understanding of a client’s background before therapy begins.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Muslim clients?

It is best to ask directly whether a therapist has worked with Muslim clients, and if so, the extent to which cultural or religious principles factored into their work together. You can also ask whether a therapist who is familiar with Islamic practices, values, and beliefs incorporates them into their professional work, and if so, how. If the therapist does not have a sufficient knowledge base, they may well know and can refer you to someone who has such experience.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

It is not necessary for a therapist to share one’s exact religious background for therapy to be successful. A qualified and culturally sensitive therapist will appreciate diversity within the Muslim community as well as diversity overall, and will have a sense of how religious and cultural issues can contribute to mental health. In addition, a good therapist would be willing to learn from their clients.

How do I recognize an effective Muslim therapist?

Like all therapists, a Muslim therapist who is effective will have the requisite training and expertise in evidence-based techniques, as well as the ability to connect with you on a personal level. An effective Muslim therapist may also demonstrate a clear understanding of your cultural background and faith. A therapist with such cultural sensitivity will set the stage for a strong therapeutic alliance.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of the Muslim faith?

The directory of Muslim therapists includes mental health providers who have shared their cultural background in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist with a similar background. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. When the number of therapists identified as Muslim is limited, the directory will also show therapists with extensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
