I have a particular focus on relational issues, grief, and residual trauma.
The concept of "self-improvement" can be empowering, but also intimidating. In a problem-saturated world, it can be easy to define ourselves as our problems, instead of looking at them as operating forces that can then be explored.

We NEED each other. We are social creatures built for connection who thrive when we are in close relationships…AND being in relationship is no easy task! Particularly in a culture that tells us that we are not supposed to depend on each other. Our work will help you cultivate more meaningful connections that inspire vulnerability and intimacy, promote security and self-confidence, and build greater awareness of the fears and challenges of being in a relationship. I work with adult individuals and relationships at all stages, poly/alternative relationship formations, and am LGBTQIA+ affirming.

We are rarely given any kind of formal relational education (and sex education is a whole other part of this story!) but rather a relational socialization.
Hi my name is Shula Melamed I am a Relationship and Wellbeing Coach. My focus is on helping people build better relationships - with others and most importantly, themselves. Individuals and couples come to me when they are looking to not only improve their interactions with others but to also understand how and where they might be holding themselves back from living bigger and bolder lives. I have an MA in Psychology from The New School University and an MPH in Social Medical Sciences - Sexuality and Health from Columbia University. I have been working with individuals, couples and groups since 2013.

My holistic approach draws from various modalities including LGBTQ+ Affirmative, the Chakra system as a map to explore shadow & relational issues, the wisdom of Jungian theories, the grounding practice of mindfulness, and the profound healing power of somatic techniques.
A flower begins as a humble seed nestled in darkness, its growth unseen, yet transforming. Navigating the twists and turns of life can be slow and taxing. We find ourselves adrift in a sea of should's and should-nots, unsure of how to act, feel, love, or simply be. Society often imposes its expectations upon us, creating a disconnection from our true selves and from others. These pressures can lead to a relentless pursuit of perfection that leaves us feeling inadequate and exhausted. Together, we can foster a strong sense of self-compassion, appreciate the genuine beauty of your personal growth, and letting it unfold naturally.

I specialize in couples therapy and relationships, working with partners to understand and identify relational issues, establish healthy communication patterns, and deepen connections and vulnerabilities.
People refer to therapy as a science or practice-but I have come to view it as an art in the most exquisite form. Therapy is about expressing and emoting, and finding value in the internal and external relationships we create. My education and clinical experience has verified the depth of this "art," revealing knowledge that can be gained, healing of old scars, and magic that can ensue when self-love occurs. I am a firm believer that therapy is not a requirement for healthy living, but similar to music and film, it can add intrigue, deepen relationships, and significantly enhance the quality of life.

I use a psychodynamic approach in therapy which involves looking at how past relational patterns and experiences may be affecting current ones.
I provide therapy to people across the lifespan, from young children to older adults, as well as couples and families. While the methods may change depending on age and circumstance the goals are often similar: to feel understood, to connect, and to grow. I work in a respectful, collaborative and creative way to explore the parts of self that might be contributing to feelings of stagnation and being stuck. I was previously licensed as an Educational and Child Psychologist in the UK and I have extensive experience in schools, working with children, parents and faculty to support student growth and wellbeing.

My approach is informed by Relational Gestalt therapy and other social and developmental theories to help identify the complex factors that influence your thoughts, emotions and behaviors.
Seeking therapy can feel daunting. Even when we know something has to change, it can feel more comfortable to stick with old habits. Clients are often surprised when I say - we keep "bad" habits for good reasons. We develop patterns to feel safe when we lack internal or outside supports to help us feel grounded, connected, accomplished, or hopeful. I support clients to increase their awareness of their own patterns, perceptions, reactions, learned behaviors, and true desires, so they have more choice in how they respond to people and situations and can take steps to build better relationships and more fulfilling lives.

I’m a relational therapist who uses ployvagal informed techniques to help clients understand themselves, heal, and grow in ways they never thought possible.
"It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are" (E.E. Cummings) It also takes courage to wade through this directory. And, courage to take the leap of faith to email, text, or call. So, I want you to know I am passionate about helping my clients grow and find out who you really are - and heal from what has kept you from yourself, and others. Becoming is the wondrous journey along the way. Think we may be a match? We may also be a match if you are highly sensitive, parenting a highly sensitive child, or navigating the world of adoption or later in life parenting.

As a therapist, I call upon a variety of practices to nurture each individual’s or couple’s personal process. With a background in movement, music, art and drama, I approach therapy as a creative pursuit rooted in clinical analysis. I have a trauma-informed approach, allowing space for the many layers of stress that our culture can bring about in an individual or within a couple. I draw on traditional psychodynamic, Gestalt, Emotionally Focused Couples therapy, and relational methodologies, while incorporating eastern philosophies, symbolism, somatics, and creative or spiritual practices.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
