Some problems can seem larger than they are. We need to get above them and see them from another perspective. That’s difficult to do because when we think about them, we always see it the same way. We may avoid thinking about it because that just makes us feel worse. Some say, why talk about it, that doesn’t help. However, you have not talked but thought about it. If you talk to someone who can see it from a different perspective, that helps shift thoughts in another more insightful direction and that’s the road to real change.

Our personalities are not just what we consciously choose; they're shaped by a mix of conscious and subconscious drives. We often act based on subconscious desires and motivations we might not be aware of. Some subconscious processes actually help us adapt and function better. By becoming more aware of these subconscious influences (both positive and negative), we can better regulate our emotions and respond more effectively to our environment. This is why I am committed to helping clients achieve their objectives by exploring and adjusting their thoughts and self-talk patterns.

Are you tired of being stuck? Have you tried to change but find yourself repeating the same mistakes? You have probably told yourself “I will change” or “things will get better,” but your quality of life have stayed the same? You are not alone as 1/3 of Americans are reported to be living under stress (APA, 2007). We are all unique individuals and we strive to be better but we often get stuck in a mental trap due to our past experiences. If you are here you have already initiated a small sequence of change, allow yourself to take it further.

I work with patients who are highly motivated to overcome challenges, and to gain meaningful self-discovery and self-development. My overall goal for patients is to promote real change, noticeable healing, and genuine insight (into oneself, others, and circumstances). I try to support and strengthen patients' coping abilities, while at the same time help them discover ways they undermine or self-sabotage their own success and well-being. I work to empower patients to develop themselves and develop healthier lives and relationships over time. It almost always take more time than we wish it did. Thus, I do not do brief therapy.

Dr. Watts believes change happens through an ecological relationship between two or more people. Therapy is a relationship that deepens our humanity. As humans, we are embedded within systems, from internal to cosmological. We are often unaware of how we are impacted by these systems. Effective therapy brings this complex web of relationships to awareness. Dr. Watts offers a relational approach designed to expand individual consciousness. He is integrative in his approach, using systemic therapies, EMDR, and a Jungian perspective to support the well-being of his patients.

Not accepting new clients
Whether we have grown up with old hurts or find ourselves overwhelmed with current stressors, I believe there are times when we come to the limit of our capacity to cope well and need to seek professional help.
I believe that learning new ways of thinking and acting with the aid of a compassionate therapist can help clients be more fully engaged in their lives and offer myself as a partner in this process.
I use a variety of approaches primarily drawn from mindfulness, cognitive behavioral, and psycho-dynamic models to help clients master current life challenges.

My name is Carol Fox, LMFT and I have been in practice for many years, witnessing the changes in the need and acceptance of therapy as a tool to becoming a better person. Finding self has many paths, so many therapies have been created, but the focus is always the same: finding the self in the lives we live each and every day. My approach to therapy is to find the right path back to the self. Life presents many challenges, whether they be trauma or change of circumstances. These challenges are on a spectrum in everyone's life. People who are willing to work on themselves are most receptive to therapy, or the art of exploring.

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
