You, or someone you care for, has been struggling with what life is asking of you. What used to work is now less effective. Yesterday you felt fine - today you are stopped cold in your tracks. You find yourself pulling away from people you love and activities you enjoy. You are focused on what might be wrong, and feeling lost and unsure about what to do next. I can help you find the way back to you, often without medication.

It takes a tremendous amount of courage for someone to allow another person to hear their deepest struggles. My greatest desire is to provide an environment where my clients feel safe, accepted, and encouraged. To support someone through hard times is an honor and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to provide support and guidance when they reach out for help.

My clients often come to me because they feel discouraged about resolving the challenges they are facing. Though troubling, depression, anxiety, conflict are often an invitation for us to take the time to focus inward, understand core issues underlying the symptoms, and learn more about our true needs. With this new awareness we may consciously choose new actions that help us develop a more fulfilling future. Through our work clients tell me they enjoy greater self esteem, more confidence that they can create what they want in their lives, and happier, healthier relationships with loved ones.

Maybe something terrible happened to you or someone you love, and you wonder how to live with the triggers, grief, and anger. Your relationships are likely affected - maybe you overreact or feel numb and detached from others. You learned coping skills but are frankly tired of coping. There is good news - the brain can heal itself, called neuroplasticity. I experienced trauma first-hand and healed. I can help you do the same and heal your brain. If you tried other things to heal and found little relief, there is a good chance you have undischarged traumatic stress. Let's get to the trauma root and extract it once and for all!

I have worked in a variety of roles, in mental health for the past 20 years. I have extensive experience with people who have been impacted by addiction, homelessness, poverty, abandonment, neglect, incarceration and other traumas. In addition I am experienced with depression, anxiety and bi-polar disorder. I believe it is important to look at how culture contributes in both our struggles and strengths.

Do you find yourself taking care of everyone else's needs rather than your own? Do you often feel self-conscious, judge yourself harshly, and worry about making mistakes? Are you struggling with anxiety or insomnia? Many of us had experiences in childhood that made us feel that we weren’t good enough or that we had to be perfect in order to be loved. These beliefs are so ingrained in us that we often aren’t even aware that they exist, but they affect how we see ourselves, how we see the world, and how we relate to others. The good news is that these beliefs CAN be changed.

Interactions with a loved one can bring out the very best and worst in us. If the dynamic with your partner or child/teen is a repeated source of pain, I am here to help. Instead of trying to understand each other, most make accusations & get defensive. I help couples and families to uncover feelings driving their interactions and reactions and then teach communication skills to help them transform the way they relate and connect. I truly believe that a loving and supportive relationship/family is one the most amazing gifts we can give to ourselves, children, and loved ones.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
