This often takes the form of anxiety, depression, stress, and substance use.
Hi there, I'm Rita! My name is Rita Haddad, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in Los Angeles, California, and working with clients all around the LA area via telehealth. I work with adults and specialize in anxiety, stress, chemical dependency, and depression, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing Therapy to help my clients make progress and start feeling better. I have found that my style, transparency, and approach are a good fit for adults and older adults who have been dealing with the challenges of life transitions, relationships, and social pressures.

As of August 2024, I am accepting new in-person clients at my downtown Oakland office and new teletherapy clients as well. I find the greatest satisfaction and success working with clients who have been managing their problems well enough to get by, but without clear, fundamental, long-term progress. Many have done conventional talk therapy for years, covering the same ground over and over with no clear benefit. These clients often have anxiety over issues that in calmer moments seem trivial, or depression for reasons they can't exactly name.

Hello, my name is Austin Jones and I'm a licensed therapist (139713) in California. I believe in providing accessible, evidence-based mental health resources that align with people’s goals — from finding motivation, direction, peace, and purpose in life, to building healthy relationships and a successful career. There is no "typical" client for me, and I see therapy as caring about a person and their core concerns rather than treating a condition. Something happens every day that reminds me how fortunate I am to be doing this work.

It is said that to the degree that you can't experience pain is to the degree that you can't experience joy. To be human is to feel and to feel is to experience both joy and sadness and everything in between. As a therapist, I help people experience joy unencumbered by losses and disappointments of the past, or by present day difficulties. I believe people heal in relationship, therefore my goal is to not only help people with their inner life, but is to equally help people connect with outer resources as well.

"Thoughts turn into Words. Words turn into Actions. Actions turn into Character. Character is everything." To create a more joyful and meaningful life is a passion of mine. I work creatively and collaboratively with adults, teens, and children to explore the heart of the matter. Together we consider (investigate, examine, observe) symptoms and emotional pain; we design realistic goals; we develop skills to alleviate obstacles; and, as we work to achieve your dreams, we discover your increased motivation and self-confidence.

Did you know only 10% to 20% of marriages get better with traditional marriage counseling? Did you know that other studies show a 98% success rate? Do you know what you can do to be in the 98% group? Do you know why men often have to be dragged in by their ear, and what you can do about it? Did you know that relationships can improve even if only one person is doing the work, and that quite often it is better to work separately? Did you know that poor communication is a symptom, not the cause of marital stress?

I have been helping people make positive changes in their life since 1986. I work in a collaborative style that begins with creating a supportive therapeutic relationship. People need to feel safe in my office in order to make successful life changes. I don't rush the change process but act as a facilitator of personal growth.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
