I have worked with individuals, couples and families to heal the wounds caused by addiction, conflict in families, grief and loss, trauma and living with chronic pain/illness.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, stuck or are looking to improve your life? Life comes with a number of challenges ranging from chronic pain to relationship issues to depression and anxiety, which all can get in the way of living the life you want to live. Moving through these difficulties is hard enough as it is, so why not have someone to help you through the process?

You are seeking a therapist because you are in emotional pain. Are you struggling with an addiction – sex, alcohol, drugs, or gambling? Have you been abused as a child or in an adult relationship? Have you experienced sexual assault, violence or other trauma? Are you experiencing issues with your significant other or other relationships? Sometimes addiction, depression, anger, and anxiety can happen because of a trauma history. Treating trauma can help you get your emotional health back and free you from addictive behavior and pain.

Maybe you're in a tough place in life and need some help finding a direction. Or perhaps you're struggling to find connection, and support. Perhaps you're struggling with depression, and anxiety, and you're trying to feel something different. Or maybe, the current state of the world has affected you, your family or your children. We all suffer, and sometimes we need help, and I'd like to acknowledge you for trying to find an answer. Therapy can be place where we learn to address our suffering by taking power over it, through learning about what we can change. Are you ready for something different in your life?

It's difficult to find the right therapist, with the many different treatment approaches, personalities, and even worldviews. As a Catholic-Christian therapist, I know it's especially challenging to find a therapist who is professional and yet competent to understand the unique experiences and challenges of people of faith. There are many reasons why people might seek services, from feeling stuck to deeply hurting, or simply to pursue a greater degree of flourishing in one's life. Whatever the reason, it is my goal to provide the environment and relationship where healing and growth can occur.

Do you feel anxious, confused, lost, guilty, hopeless, helpless, stuck? Is someone in your life easily angered, constantly blaming, manipulating, lying, threatening, contemptuous? Do you feel nervous around this person never knowing what to expect, having to be careful of what you say, and not knowing what will trigger an argument? If this sounds all too familiar, it may be time to seek help.

My hope is for you to walk out of sessions feeling heard, enlivened and more insightful than when you walked in. I have been practicing as an LCSW for the past 6 years and much of my focus has been with adults who are dealing with depression, anxiety, life adjustments and addiction. I like helping people find contentment and happiness in their lives. I believe it is important to understand one's self and one's personal values and to make choices that are positive and life-affirming. I have had extensive experience working with people having experienced trauma and loss, relationship problems, and who have substance abuse problems. Creative people are also one of my specializations. My training is primarily psycho-dynamic along with cognitive-behavioral orientation. I believe mindfulness, spirituality and forgiveness are ways of helping alter patterns of behavior that can keep us stuck in our lives.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
