With Grief, often clients trust that "I get it" because I've experienced the death of a child.
I am both a Grief Specialist and Psychotherapist. My goal for my clients is always" clarity and empowerment". I work interactively, compassionately, with depth, and often with humor. I work with a combination of heart intuition and practical experience. The CBT distorted thoughts that include thoughts like "should", "never, always", and "catastrophizing" can feed our anxiety. I can point to resources for relaxation tools. You may have noticed that new losses open up old grief and trauma.

I have training in working with perinatal loss, grief, and narcissistic abuse recovery.
You may find working together to be supportive if you are grieving the loss of a pregnancy and need a private space to sort through your thoughts, beliefs, and emotions about it. Many women benefit from being able to speak frankly about their loss experience. You may also find it helpful to work together if you are in a relationship where you feel fundamentally confused, doubt yourself, worry about wearing your friendships thin by talking about your relationship too much, or find yourself thinking that you have to be sure you have tried everything before leaving. You deserve this support and you are not "crazy."

Special interests: relationship breakthroughs; affairs, infidelity, betrayal, trust; couples communication; treatment for health professionals and first responders; coping with a cancer diagnosis; in-depth growth work for individuals; coping with anxiety and depression; loss/ grief/ bereavement.
Choosing a therapist can be a daunting process - you want to find someone you'll 'click with' and whose style meets your needs. I'm an interactive therapist and I do more than just ask "how does that make you feel?" A lot happens in a single session. I keep things moving along, edging towards your goals, and calling you on things that are in conflict with what you say you want. I offer a safe space for you to be heard, understood, and challenged.

I understand I skillfully work with those who are in crisis, managing significant life changes, suffering from grief and loss, sorting out work problems, lacking satisfaction in their intimate relationships and searching for meaningful relationships.
Living a life where struggling is a regular experience is difficult to change, because no one wants to feel worse. Therapy helps by talking through what's happened, what feels wrong and what ideas you have about it, all which may be conscious or unconscious. What's unconscious surfaces naturally through our work together. Most people enter therapy afraid, because they don't know where to start or are overwhelmed because so much has happened. I can help you navigate this terrain to relieve pain, clarify thoughts and beliefs, and improve well-being.

Hello! My name is Sarah and I am a clinical social worker licensed in the state of CA. I have experience working with children, families, and older adults. Throughout the years, I have found my passion working with women and older adults. Whatever brings you on your search for a therapist, whether it be trauma or loss, you don't have to walk through it alone. The biggest influence on my therapy practice is my own experience in therapy. Going to therapy is hard work (not to mention expensive!) - but I saw measurable differences in myself. This is data I draw upon when I say that change is always possible.

When we feel stuck in our situation, it can create feelings of hopelessness. In addition to the many problems that complicate our daily lives such as anxiety, panic attacks, depression, patients come to me with complex relationship issues including marital distress, divorce recovery, verbal & emotional abuse, loss of child, parent, or spouse. I approach therapy from a holistic perspective, to address the root problem, not just the symptoms. Like physical therapy, the goal is to get well and end treatment. I offer perspective on your experience, and provide clear, concise directions on meeting your treatment goals.

One doesn't plan for a late in life divorce; the death of a spouse or becoming a caregiver to an elderly parent or friend. These late life transitions have become common for people in their 50's and upwards - leaving many feeling alone, afraid, unsupported and inadequate. The need to "reinvent" and "redefine" who you are now can be paralyzing. As a therapist with an extensive background in grief and loss, we will explore the "unknown" together; define your strengths and personal goals; and remove barriers to finding meaning at any age.

I appreciate helping individuals and couples that just want to live better lives, have deeper relationships, and find more joy in day to day living. Life can be tough. Good therapy offers support, a place to be heard, guidance, and sometimes a place to hear truths that you may not want to hear, but need to hear. I offer a supportive and direct approach to those needing help with sex and relationship issues, anxiety, depression, anger management, trauma, and addictions. I also have a special spot in my heart to support those who have dealt with loss, whether recently or many years ago. Therapy is a space to adapt, stretch, and grow.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
