As a psychologist, I provide psychotherapy and psychological evaluation services. I typically utilize a CBT approach when providing psychotherapy. However, each parent and client comes to therapy with specific concerns which they would like addressed. To provide the most effective treatment, other modalities may be incorporated after taking into account concerns, diagnosis, and age. Whether it's CBT, mindfulness techniques, ACT, schema therapy, Gottman method, or narrative therapy, our sessions will be unique and goal driven.

Life is full of invisible challenges, and so often life and the people around us are moving too fast to stop and explore what we're really dealing with. Therapy is a place where those hidden struggles, griefs, mental and physical health obstacles, longings and also hopes for the future can all be nurtured thoughtfully between therapist and client.

My work focuses on those who are attempting to navigate through serious psychiatric problems such as depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse or living in a household with someone who struggles with substance abuse or addiction. I help teens, stuck young adults, and stressed families navigate the perilous journey to find serenity and sanity in their daily lives. Throughout my decade and a half of experience, I have learned that effective treatment starts with dignity and authenticity. These factors lay the foundation for the most important aspects of successful therapy: safety, honesty, and courageous vulnerability.

Hi, my name is Dr. Martin. In my seven years as a licensed psychologist, I have learned that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapeutic intervention; each patient brings their own unique experiences and skills. That's why I approach sessions with an eclectic and practical style, allowing us to collaboratively formulate goals and develop techniques for success.

Do you often find yourself feeling misunderstood, struggling to manage intense emotions, or repeatedly encountering challenges in your relationships? You might notice patterns of impulsive reactions, feeling conflicted about trusting others, or engaging in behaviors that seem to sabotage your own goals. Perhaps you have a strong desire for connection but find yourself getting caught in a cycle of pushing people away. If this resonates, I offer a compassionate space to explore these patterns, understand where they come from, and work towards creating a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Dads matter. Dads matter as involved, responsible, and caring fathers. Furthermore, dads matter as people: in addition to being positive impacts on children, fathers have inherent human value. Dads deserve support, resources, and self curiosity and knowledge; and children deserve secure and healthy caregivers. Experiential therapy encourages deep exploration, authentic impact, and sustainable change. As fathers, this intersects with themes of male caregiver identity and healing for future generations. Therapy promotes internal connection, and corrective emotional experiences can mend the mind to create transformational growth.

Hello! Let me congratulate you on taking the first step towards your-self discovery and personal healing. I understand how challenging it is to find a therapist who will honor, respect, and value the often private and personal information you share in session. I believe in providing clients space to feel safe enough to unpack suppressed emotions and thoughts while gently offering insights to how their patterns might be counterintuitive to the goals they want. The fundamentals of my practice include being genuine, compassionate, empowerment of others, unbiased, no judgments, and being scientifically sound.

I utilize the evidence-based treatments of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and schema therapy in my practice.
I am a second generation Chinese-American clinical psychologist. I completed postdoctoral training at Stanford Medicine and have expertise in teaching tools to navigate intense emotions such as anxiety and anger, and improve self-confidence and relationship satisfaction. I also specialize in teaching communication skills for couples and families such as conflict resolution, setting and maintaining boundaries, and expressing and getting relationship needs met. I'm particularly passionate about working with individuals from multicultural backgrounds, such as being a first or second generation immigrant or mixed race.

Schema Therapy

How does schema therapy work?

Schema therapy is based on the idea that maladaptive thought patterns formed in childhood—that other people can never be relied on, for example—can interfere with healthy functioning in adulthood. Accordingly, schema therapy works by directly targeting such unhealthy schemas, identifying their consequences, and replacing them with more adaptive ways of thinking. To this end, schema therapists aim to “reparent” the client by offering what they didn’t get in childhood—validation, for instance, or compassion—to reorient their worldview.

Is schema therapy evidence-based?

Schema therapy is still considered relatively new, and research on its efficacy is still in progress. However, some studies have concluded that it can be effective at treating certain mental health conditions, most notably personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder. Evidence for its efficacy in treating conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD is promising but less conclusive, and experts warn that much of the existing research is of low quality.

Is schema therapy a type of CBT?

Schema therapy is based on many principles of CBT, most notably the process of recognizing and challenging maladaptive thought patterns. But because schema therapy also draws from other approaches, including psychoanalysis and Gestalt therapy, it is not considered a form of CBT. It also typically delves deeper into the client’s childhood than does CBT.

How does schema therapy work?

Schema therapy does not call for a set number of sessions and is instead open-ended, with the treatment timeline depending on the client’s primary concern(s), progress, and preferences. Treatment that lasts between six months and two years is common, though many clients will start to see progress much earlier than that.
