Accepting New Patients. When we feel stuck in our situation, it can create feelings of hopelessness. In addition to the many problems that complicate our daily lives such as anxiety, panic attacks, depression, patients come to me with complex relationship issues including marital distress, divorce recovery, verbal & emotional abuse, loss of child, parent, or spouse. I approach therapy from a holistic perspective, to address the root problem, not just the symptoms. Like physical therapy, the goal is to get well and end treatment. I offer perspective on your experience, and provide clear, concise directions on meeting your goals.

Trauma is something we all have in common. That statement will either completely resonate with you, or you’ll think it’s ridiculous with the belief, “well, I’ve never experienced trauma”. I would challenge the latter with your definition of trauma. There are what we call "big T" traumas, which are the catastrophic happenings in life. And "little t" traumas, which are the less significant but still impactful happenings; things like not getting the promotion you've been working towards, family tension, financial stressors, or even indirect exposure to something disturbing.

There are times in life when our paths lead us off course and we find ourselves struggling with serious issues like negativity, depression, worry, anxiety, interpersonal relational issues, difficulty with co-workers or unfulfilling marriages. Some of us struggle with unresolved trauma from our past, leaving us feeling distant, disconnected and alone. No matter how difficult your current situation seems, I believe that it is always possible to get back on track and feel better. In my years specializing in domestic violence, eating disorders and trauma related therapy, I have helped individuals, couples and families overcome multiple obstacles.

I conceptualize people and their relationships from an object-relations, attachment-based, and trauma-informed perspective, since that makes the most intuitive sense for me. I understand that a disrupted childhood can disproportionately impact someone’s entire life, but I am absolutely certain that people are not defined by their experiences. I work well with people who experienced trauma or hardship early in life, and now find themselves struggling to maintain healthy relationships, asking existential questions, and feeling generally lost or stuck.

" Welcome. You, like many of us at some point in our lives, may be dealing with an issue that you need help with at this time. Life is complicated and often stressful, and over time stress can impact our ability to cope as well as we would like. Perhaps you are struggling with changes in your mood, energy or self-esteem. Or experiencing problems in your relationships; perhaps having trouble functioning at work or in social situations. I have over 30 years experience working with individuals on these and other concerns.

We specialize in Trauma and PTSD. We work with individual adults who have a long history of childhood trauma, sexual violence and abuse, difficult family dynamics, intergenerational trauma, cultural differences with their parents, family members with substance use issues, social anxiety, phobia, and depression. We help you process what happened, attend to and be with your emotions without dissociating, and rather find relief from sharing the stories. We also work with people whose doctors have recommended seeking trauma therapy like EMDR therapy.

I have been working with youths and adults who are considered as at risk and victims of domestic violence and intimate partner abuse.
Have you ever felt like someone could help you lift up your life? Therapy is a shared process with you and me together to discuss your uncomfortable issues. I offer warmth and compassion to enhance your ability to make your own choices and take actions that are effective toward your goals. My approach is evidence-based and client-centered, and it is influenced by mindfulness, multicultural perspectives, and family systems. I carefully draw from the insights and techniques from psychological theories that I believe can effect change.

My clinical experience includes working with clients that have suffered from trauma and abuse (generational, sexual, physical, and emotional), as well as Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, and Personality Disorders.
I like to take a comprehensive, collaborative approach to treatment and focus on building a professional and positive relationship versus treating a diagnosis. To me, it is important to build a genuine relationship based on trust, openness and honesty, that emphasizes meeting the client where they’re at. I believe the client is an expert in their own lives and my role is to help them become a healthier, happier version of themselves.

With a background in Sex Education, Sexual Assault and Intimate Partner Abuse Prevention I have spent over 20 years helping people process both the joys and sorrows of relationships.
I take a very straightforward, yet warm and non-judgmental approach to my work. I offer client-centered therapy with an emphasis on helping individuals reach wholeness and authenticity. I do not believe I can be an authority on anyone else’s experience, but I might be able to offer a perspective that helps someone see their life in another way. We can explore together not just the thoughts you are having, but also the way you relate to others and the way you relate to your body and what it expresses.

EMDR studies show high degrees of effectiveness with the following conditions: Fears or Depression related to Trauma, Surviving Childhood Abuse, Performance & Test Anxiety, Sexual/Physical Abuse, Anxiety/Panic Attacks, Surviving an Assault or Robbery, Surviving Rape or an Accident, Witnessing Violence, Loss or Injury of a Loved One, Childhood Trauma.
My primary area of focus has been working with people who suffer from trauma and anxiety, in addition to depression. I do much work with those who suffer from emotional neglect, abuse histories, & post-traumatic stress (PTSD). I'm certified in EMDR and am continually impressed at the ability of something so simple to so rapidly relieve pain and suffering. EMDR has been listed as one of the leading trauma therapies. It can also be very effective in helping those who suffer from a childhood history of family difficulties and a lack of nurturing. Also trained in Somatic Experiencing.

I work with depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, ADHD, grief and recovery from abuse.
There comes a time when we need help. I appreciate the courage anyone demonstrates when they make that call. I hope to create a space where individuals and families can receive that trusted assistance. I have been a therapist for thirty years. I was a tennis pro for ten years before that. I am aware of the process of change. There is a timing when an individual, or family, is ready to make those adjustments. In working with children, I involve the whole family. I especially enjoy the travels that the adolescent makes, and the perplexing attempts parents make in adjusting to this challenging phase. I work with addictions.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
