At The Maple Counseling Center, I received supervised training in psychodynamic, interpersonal therapy.
Are you experiencing feelings of anxiety or depression? Is your mood affecting your relationships or career? Sometimes life's challenges become difficult to overcome alone. I offer free phone consultations to see if my practice might be the right fit for your needs. I have diverse training and experience working with adults, adolescents, couples and families. While there are no guarantees of what you will experience, therapy has shown significant benefits for most people who go through it. And being here, on this site, is an important first step.

It seems brave to me to make a decision to start therapy, to come and open up to a complete stranger. Whether coming to gain life skills as an individual or a couple; Or coming to therapy to process life events as a family or an individual, the one thing on my part most necessary is to listen without judgment or a personal agenda. Working collaboratively, creating a relationship based on trust and empathy is vital. I feel like it is my part to be professional, ethical, and supportive. I specialize in " interpersonal neurobiology" which is an interdisciplinary view of the mind and how it affects how we feel and behave.

I am trained in EMDR but I also utilize other modalities such as CBT, ERP, and interpersonal therapy.
Is your anxiety stopping you from participating in life and connecting with people? Are you always worried about what people will think of you, of how you look or what to say? That you are not good enough or good at what you do? Do you have intrusive thoughts that just will not go away? You might avoid social situations or ruminate about them on your way home. You think you are a bad friend/parent/son our daughter, maybe even a bad person? I will help you conquer your negative thoughts and painful bouts of anxiety making sure you get to engage in the relationships and the activities that you want.

Therapy is a unique experience aimed at helping clients understand their emotions as well as learning that our symptoms are telling us something. It is the collaborative relationship between therapist and client that allows each client to explore not only their symptoms but understand ones self, while obtaining valuable tools to deal with emotions, conflict, and interpersonal communication. In my office I offer a warm non-judgmental space for self exploration and growth.

Your fears, anxieties, and self-doubts stem from a deep desire to be seen, known, and loved. When you can quiet these fears and connect with your story, you can find a path to what you most need in life. The narrative you tell yourself has immense power. It can motivate you, transform you, and move you to action, or it can limit you, undermine you, and close you off to future possibilities. Embracing and owning your story, while loving yourself through the process, is the bravest thing you will ever do. This act of courage not only empowers you but also frees you to write a new ending.

We are drawn to what is familiar. Most of us learned as children that we had to behave and think in certain ways to survive in our given environments. This knowledge became our childhood coping skills. We utilize these coping skills, which may no longer be effective in our adult relationships and may need to be reevaluated. In addition, we may find that we are depressed, anxious or repeatedly choosing the "wrong" partner, because the familiarity feels safe. I have an empathic understanding of these issues and will help you to explore and move forward so that you can enjoy more happiness in life, with loving, healthy relationships.

If you're a high-achieving individual with frequent or intense anxiety, you may feel discouraged and frustrated by your symptoms. Constant worry, obsessions, disrupted sleep and sudden anxiety attacks can be debilitating, even for the most competent person. I work with successful professionals, including physicians, attorneys, executives, creatives and entertainers, and their family members; I know it can be hard to seek help when you are used to solving your own problems. However, anxiety symptoms are very treatable when you work with a professional who offers the most effective approach.

Welcome to my "family practice." Finding a therapist that you feel comfortable talking with is crucial to the success of your work with that therapist. My work with an individual, whether child or adult, as well as with a family, begins with us developing a conversational style and working relationship together that will foster growth and learning. Together in this environment, we can work towards those goals we have set out, or simply take the opportunity to express feelings and thoughts in a safe, confidential environment.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
