Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is applied to teach skills for managing challenging emotions, improving relationships, and coping with distress.
As a first-generation Mexican-American therapist, I understand the stigmas associated with therapy. I hold the belief that everyone is entitled to a safe space to overcome life's obstacles, develop their strengths, and build resilience. I am dedicated to helping adults who deal with daily symptoms of worry, fear, sadness, and low self-esteem. In this journey, I view the client as the true expert of their life, with myself serving as a guide.

I am informed in CBT, DBT and Internal Family Systems and often incorporate those as well.
The buddhist philosophy "turn poison into medicine" has always resonated with me. My favorite part of my work is witnessing a client's transformation, seeing them take painful experiences that they have lived through and honor their strength and resilience. I wholeheartedly believe when someone is suffering, they are disconnected from their core selves. There is something that is preventing them from feeling the safety or freedom to be authentic. It is my goal as a therapist to help clients discover what the barrier to that connection is. The disconnect from self can show up as depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts.

I draw upon a variety of modalities in session such as CBT, DBT, MBSR, ACT, IFS, somatic approaches, existential approaches, and other identity and meaning-making focused approaches.
You've been in therapy, read the personal development books, and know the coping skills, and yet there are still areas you struggle with, that hump you can't seem to get over, and that nagging dissatisfaction that you intuitively know doesn't have to be there. Perhaps you even feel like your self-reflective and empathetic nature works against you much of the time. I love diving deep with my clients into the identity structures that keep destructive, harmful, or painful patterns in place and supporting them with discovering the innate wisdom that will guide you into a relationship of profound trust with and love for yourself.

I specialize in IFS, DBT, and CBT to help my clients to identify their internal parts and help these parts to discover healthier skills for coping.
Life can feel impossible to avoid struggling and we often don't feel we have the skills to cope successfully through. Unfortunately, sometimes we don't have all the resources we need for a given situation. Parts of us take on desperate roles trying to help us to survive. This might look like anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction, and relationship/family issues. I aim to help you process unresolved issues and feelings and find solutions.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
