Depression Therapists in Bonsall, CA
When we've lost touch with our truer self, life is just harder. If you're not as present and engaged in your life as you'd like, you may also find your body weighing in through symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and unhelpful patterns of behavior. Underlying such symptoms are often vital, "offline" parts of ourselves that a good therapeutic alliance can help you to identify, strengthen and expand. If you're experiencing a readiness to take your online search for a therapist to the next level, I offer a brief phone consultation to help determine goodness of fit.

We live in very challenging times with increased levels of stress; our relationships - our closest relationships- take the biggest hit, bringing misunderstanding, hurt and fear.Too often, we try to ignore the problems presented, believing they will somehow just go away. They usually don't.
Working with a therapist who "really gets you," therapy is a powerful tool to address: crisis - loss of relationships, divorce, problems with a child, stress, overload; on-going problems - marital conflict, family issues, ineffective co-parenting after divorce; personal growth - enrichment of relationsips, insight with action.
People who come to work in therapy want to feel better.

If you feel you are not living your best life, therapy can help identify what is holding you back and how to overcome these barriers so you can live a more fulfilling, happier life. Often it is adverse childhood experiences that have a lasting impact creating anxiety, mood disorders and adult relationship difficulties. Other times, it is recent life stressors that bring up feelings of sadness, inadequacy or anxiety. Therapy can help untangle the "whys" and, most importantly, provide evidence-based tools to move you from coping to living.

I am an empathetic trauma-informed Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in California. I specialize in Grief, Trauma, and Eating Disorders, having worked with these populations in multiple settings. As you are reading this you may be minimizing various experiences you have had in life. Often, we tend to minimize our experiences as a way of coping with them and the world around us. While this may have been necessary at some point in life, I am here to support you through the process of looking at those experiences once again and learning how to hold them in a way that you may have not felt was possible.

I see therapy as a self-discovery process, in which a client seeks to solve problems in a safe and positive environment under the guidance of a professional. I believe that anxiety, depression and negative stress can be resolved more effectively, when there is understanding that basic steps must be taken to first stabilize one's life then one's passion and purpose in life can be addressed to find self-fulfillment. I especially enjoy working with adolescents and adults of all ages, who are in the midst of life transitions.

I treat anxiety, depression, couple conflict, PTSD, and life complications.
As an "elder", I understand the vulnerabilities and anxieties that can arise due to the aging process. As a former counselor for active duty military around the world, I have a deep appreciation for the issues and sacrifices that are made by military families. Both elders and military families deal with change, loss and grief more than the average person. Yet these are issues that we will all eventually have to face. Learning to more gracefully move through these transitions is an opportunity for deeper emotional, psychological and spiritual growth. These challenges can become the medicine for your spirit and soul.

Depression Therapists
What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
