Therapy is not something I thought I'd be on the receiving end of, let alone providing it for others. As I was growing up I struggled with mental health issues and felt as if I had no one to turn to. The concepts of mental health and therapy were culturally taboo or seen as "not real" in my family. I'm here to tell you that your mental health and well-being are valid and you are not alone. I want to be the support for others that I never really had myself. My therapeutic approach involves creating a safe and welcoming environment for all clients to feel comfortable and confident in navigating through their life challenges.

Hello, my name is Karen Patton, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and masters level therapist. I approach therapy by looking at how you see yourself in relation to others in the world, meaning your sense of power and feeling of belonging and connectedness. Many people have feelings of not being good enough, feelings of guilt and thoughts about things that they think that they should or should not have done, that keep them from fully enjoying life and their relationships.

The treatment method I use will vary for each person or couple who seek my help. I give you practical advice based on your situation, not generic "deep breath, count to 10 and it will all be "better" advice. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of my primary modalities. My hope is that we will build trust after you meet me and decide if I am a good fit for you. Therapists are like pants, I wont be a good fit for everyone and that is ok, come meet me and see!

Do you want to be authentically you? Do you feel misunderstood, like you are constantly second guessing your decisions, pressure from others on how to ‘act,’ feel unheard, or like you are masking your feelings by putting on your familiar smile? Do you compare your life to those around you because ‘they’ seem to have it all together? Society paints a picture of the perfect person, family, grades, relationship, job, body, etc., Do any of the following phrases sound familiar, “You need to get over it,” “I’ve dealt with that, and I’m great,” “That is not something you need to be depressed about?” We've heard it all haven't we?

You do not need to have a mental health disorder to seek therapy. Sometimes we just need someone to listen and provide extra support through life transitions and challenges. I'm pleased to be that person for you in your life. Everyone suffers from life's struggles, but healing begins through connections to both ourselves and the people in our lives. We all are resilient and have the aptitude to feel peace and acceptance with relationships and within.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
