As a society, it feels like we're wired to always be on the run and "multi-tasking." It's overwhelming and drives constant anxiety. Add on top of that we're in an election year and back to polarization as a nation. Eventually our bodies say ENOUGH! and shut down to a depressive state to conserve energy. Then introduce something we find to make us feel better, and our tendency to overuse and abuse. I'm the rare mental health professional who is a licensed substance abuse counselor, MFT, and 14 years into my own recovery. I understand all too well the drive to just escape and to somehow, someway try to feel better.

Which therapist is the right fit for you? Someone you trust and provides confidence of being able to meet your needs is the most important ingredient in my line of work. Navigating pitfalls of life and relations doesn't have to be a puzzle. Worrying about the future and thinking of the past can keep us from living. I enjoy witnessing the potentials of others come alive. Giving practical skills to navigate the challenges life allows confidence to shine through. Seeing people meet their goals and grow beyond what they imagined is a realistic outcome for those who choose to enter therapy.

You had a difficult childhood where you felt hurt, neglected, misunderstood, or experienced trauma. You now often feel alone, confused, and disconnected from your authentic self. Your anxiety and/or depression are making you feel hopeless and you're wondering if something is deeply wrong with you. You spend hours each day ruminating about your problems and numbing your pain with the various vices of drugs, alcohol, food, and social media. Deep inside you want "the life" but another part holds you back

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Justin, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Addictions Treatment Counselor in California. I have worked in and around the field of Addictions for over a decade. Addictions grow and thrive in elements of shame and guilt, leading people to believe that they are alone and unloved in a cold, heartless and unforgiving world. However, these beliefs are a part of the illness's effect.

Welcome to my practice. I have been in practice since 2007 and have been featured on ABC, NBC, and KCAL as an expert psychologist. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, financial recklessness, gambling, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, and relational conflicts. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
