Therefore, it is imperative to connect and collaborate with clients to better understand their needs. I work with a variety of client types but not limited to those experiencing depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, interpersonal difficulties, and relationship challenges, and those experiencing severe mental illness.

Sometimes we find it hard to understand what is going on inside our heart and head. Perhaps we have a vague idea but we can't find the words to adequately express what we are feeling. Therapy offers us the opportunity to put language to our experience and increase our self awareness. Personal and relational transformation depend on that self awareness. I strive to create a safe place for you to journey inward without judgment; so that you may feel respected, secure and understood. To be invited into the depths of another person's soul is always a privilege. It is an honor for me to take this journey with you.

I work with people in transition or who are preparing for change. Artists, actors and writers. Those in bereavement. Or who are living with a catastrophic health-related diagnosis, recent or of long duration. Caregivers. Mental health interns who need to explore their own issues in order to practice mindfully. Folks who are using substances more than they want. People who want to decrease their distress but who also have a curiosity about its sources. People who want to talk with someone about the most important thing in the world, perhaps to discover what that is.

To follow my first mind is a Southern expression to explain the power and importance of listening and trusting one's intuition and gut instinct to care for and support oneself. Your first mind is knowing without conscious knowing, a higher power, the universe, you. It reminds you of your worthiness, your strength, and your connectedness. If you desire to experience life more authentically, to fortify your intuition, and to hear your first mind either for the first time or with more clarity. In that case, I welcome the opportunity to work with you.

I work with teens, children, and adults struggling with unresolved trauma, relational issues, existential fear, grief, gender dysphoria, self-harm, addiction, anxiety, ADHD, and depression. I work from a psychodynamic lens, which means looking at my client’s past as a means of informing the present and helping them discover the unconscious blind spots that unknowingly contribute to their distress. I am passionate about helping to reconcile past trauma such as abuse, bullying, oppression, and toxic relationships. I also work with families and couples stuck in destructive patterns and having the same fight over and over.

Finding and embracing an authentic self is one of the core missions of adult life. What too often corrupts this search, though, is the phenomenon of shame - a destructive force if there ever was one. Shame can contribute to substance use, depression, anxiety, interpersonal struggles, poor health outcomes, maladaptive trauma responses, and, at extremes, psychosis and suicidal ideation. Such maladies, when approached in the context of a compassionate and trusting therapeutic relationship, can be transformed into signs pointing the way toward a meaningful and fulfilling sense of self.

I have worked with adults and adolescents who suffer from addiction/unhealthy substance use, codependency, trauma (generational and chronic), depression, relational problems, life transitions, grief, work stress, cultural issues, and anxiety to name a few.
Sometimes we’re not able to make the changes we want in life without additional support. Congratulations on taking this step! It is a scary one, especially when there can be cultural barriers and stigma to receive therapy. My goal is to support you to remove barriers to growth and change, so you align with your most authentic self, have healthier relationships, and feel a sense of peace. I am dedicated to creating a space that is warm, compassionate and accessible where you feel safe to explore the way in which you can build a more fulfilling life.

They often struggle with issues across a number of domains, whether eating, substance use, career, identity, and of course relationships.
With so much access to the lives of others, it is inevitable to compare: it appears as though everyone else has it figured out, meanwhile you’re behind, on the wrong track, or missing out on something. I work with people who feel like their lives are a mess. Sometimes this sense of chaos has been lifelong. Other times something has happened that completely upends the structure of a person’s life, leaving them to pick up the pieces. There are also those who appear as though they are keeping it together, while inside they are falling apart.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
