Perhaps some of the important pieces of your life have not fallen into place yet, leaving you feeling stuck. Balancing dating/relationships can be challenging, especially with work, family, and personal life. Experiencing this day after day can feel hopeless, but I am glad to say that you CAN make things better. Men are often taught to dismiss and devalue their feelings. Perhaps it was a lack of support of our emotions growing up or a deeply ingrained acceptance of the social norm that celebrates a very specific definition of masculinity. Either way, it can result in unaddressed anxiety, resentment, or depression.

Our relationships are the greatest treasures we have in life. When we feel disconnected in our relationship with ourselves and others, we are more prone to experiencing isolation, dysfunction and pain. While our pain can be a great teacher, feeling stuck and alone on the journey of life can feel hopeless at times. My goal is to walk with you through the healing process and support you in restoring life in your relationship with yourself and others. With a holistic approach to therapy, addressing the needs of the body, mind and soul are vital for restoring connection as we walk together through the healing process.

For many years I struggled with addiction, Anxiety, and depression.
**Telehealth Video sessions are available** Are you having trouble controlling your drinking but feel like "rehab" isn't for you? Have loved ones in your life pleaded with you to stop? Is your alcohol or drug use causing relationship issues? Anxiety problems? I know exactly how you’re feeling. Alcohol or drug abuse can extremely difficult to manage on your own. For the last 19 years I’ve been helping clients navigate the personal recovery process and the trials and tribulations they come with it. If you are in a place in your life where you are ready to make some needed changes, I can help you be free from the grips of addiction.

We’ve all inherited something. Height. Skin color. The way we laugh. But we’ve also received invisible things. Our sense of safety. Confidence. Narratives about our worth and ways of thinking and seeing the world. We are recipients of those around us in both beautiful and painful ways. And—whether we want them or not—these are the things we build our life on. However we are not merely what we have received, we also get to choose. We get to live a life that reflects the deepest and truest parts of ourself and extend that into the world and to the ones we love.

My name is Jonah Givelber. I am a licensed social worker with many years of experience working with children and their families. Using kindness, support, and humor I try to guide my clients toward a resolution of their problems. I have worked with many children experiencing trouble following directions at school and at home. I believe that most of what we are as hu mans is learned and that we can learn ways to behave and feel that help us live a better life.
I am a 63-year-old Latino from the Los Angeles Area. As a teenager and young adult and now as an older adult, I encountered many obstacles that I had to figure out by myself. My hope is to support you in overcoming your obstacles. I grew up around hard-working people who had little or no education. I had no examples to follow or mentors to guide me. I understand what it feels like to feel alone even in a crowded room. I can assist you with your obstacles by helping you understand their origins and by learning about the power that you possess to overcome them.

The therapist's task is to provide as far as is possible the ideal conditions for self-reflection, a place where one can explore the past, present and future apart from the pressures of life, in privacy, without judgement. The therapy room should serve as a "secure base" from which one can roam freely and return for honest curious reflection, guidance and support.

Therapy can be FUN, Exciting, and Healing (with hopefully some GOOD belly LAUGHS). I get back to everyone within 1-8 hours. You're hesitant since it's your first time in therapy. You feel empty, hopeless, isolated, and depressed. You DON'T want a therapist who just sits there. You want interaction. You have family trauma that have left you shackled. I can empathize as I have dealt with those same issues too! I help people dealing with depression and anxiety by exploring other possibilities to cope and giving a safe space to fully express themselves honestly and authentically while gaining a sense of individuality.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
