Hello, my name is Cecelia Pooley Gillespie, LCSW, SEP. I work with all ages, with a recent focus on youth and families, including those in rural and Indigenous communities.. I can help with anxiety, depression, PTSD, stress, parenting, life transitions, and more. My therapeutic approach is strengths based and solution focused. While I find the cognitive and behavioral lens of CBT, DBT and Narrative Therapy to be valuable, I believe it can be important at times to also incorporate Experiential Therapy, such as creativity, movement, and expression, as well as Somatic work for exploring the mind-body connection.

Humans are relational beings and relationships play an important role in our everyday lives. When relationships get off track, it can be overwhelming. I work with individuals, couples, and families to help relationships heal. I seek to help individuals, couples and families navigate a wide range of challenges pertaining to relationships. I have an interest in relational concerns around sexual dynamics as well as improving relational vulnerability and connection. I work from both a contextual and systems perspective to honor how an individual's intersections of identity influence how they interact with and are received by the world.

You’ve always considered yourself someone who works well under pressure. Stress was never an obstacle – in fact, it motivated you to be better. You were unstoppable and could handle any challenge that came your way. But lately, something has changed. Now, you find yourself unable to shrug off concerns like you have in the past. You lay in bed at night, restless, mind racing. You’re tired and unfocused at work, making mistakes you’ve never made before. You’ve long sacrificed your personal relationships in favor of professional advancement. But now you’re wondering what any of that was for. You know something has to change, but how?

Childhood trauma can cripple us, it creates overpowering ‘intense’ emotions such as anxiety, depression, and anger when left unattended which begins to create physical symptoms to defend our bodies from the internal wounds. Has there ever been a time in your life where you have experienced this reaction? Are you experiencing these feelings based on current or past trauma from childhood, early teens, adolescence, adulthood, or as a senior? I aim to utilize a variety of actionable techniques to help reduce trauma related symptoms and make lasting changes in life.

Do you feel overwhelmed by current challenges? Are you plagued with shame, guilt, resentment or fear related to the past? Anxiety and depression, destructive coping behaviors, and unresolvable intimacy issues all reflect something of our struggle to love and be loved. We are a result of every single experience in life, good or bad. Over the course of a lifetime, we developed habits and perspectives that helped us to cope with suffering. However, when those old methods no longer serve, it is time to let another person to walk alongside in order to examine and discover new ways for dealing with life's challenges. I offer a safe, nonjudgmental and empathetic environment that fosters self reflection in order to encourage personal transformation and learning what works for you. Taking the first step might be difficult, but you will be glad you did it. Hablo Espa˜ñol.

Your story deeply matters to me. I provide relational, integrative, and sex-positive therapy to queer and BIPOC clients. My clients are looking to make their minds and bodies a safe home and are often the first in their families to have the courage to disrupt limiting beliefs and cycles. They seek to challenge expectations as they dare to redefine themselves wholeheartedly. Together, we will make space to explore the impact of generational and personal traumas, navigate the complexities and beauty of intersecting identities, and create meaningful, lasting, and accessible healing practices. Let's connect!

Therapy can be FUN, Exciting, and Healing (with hopefully some good belly LAUGHS too). I get back to everyone within 1-7 hours. You're hesitant since it's your first time in therapy. You feel empty, hopeless, and isolated. Every day is a struggle due to anxiety, depression. You have family trauma, cultural expectations, life transitions that have left you shackled. I understand as I have dealt with those same issues too! I help people dealing with depression and anxiety by exploring other possibilities to cope and giving a safe space to fully express themselves honestly and authentically while gaining a sense of individuality.

I believe deeply in the transformative potential and enduring nature of psychotherapy. When we're feeling stuck, confused or alone, therapy can help us to untangle our emotions, clarify our struggles, and better understand ourselves and others - ultimately forming inroads to real and lasting change. I am a compassionate and collaborative therapist: I establish a safe, non-judgmental space where our mutual exploration of your relationships, family history, career, sexuality, or whatever is troubling you currently - as well as aspects of our therapeutic relationship - will open pathways to new awareness and opportunities for welcome change, growth and healing.

We are at a time where compassion towards self is more important than ever. Life is overwhelming and complicated. Maybe you "have it all" but feel like something is missing or you are having issues communicating your needs. Many struggle with the idea of having symptoms of depression and anxiety internalizing the symptoms with being "crazy". I am here to remove the labels and have individuals be more aware of the symptoms you experience (fear, poor sleep and appetite, nervousness, sadness, negative thoughts, etc.) and treat them with compassion, reframing and safe coping skills to better improve your life.

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
