Specialties include working with individuals who identify as transgender or nonbinary, active military members and veterans, tech professionals, and people with climate anxiety.
It takes courage to start therapy. The very fact that you’re considering it probably means you’re getting ready to make some significant changes in your life. My approach to therapy focuses on understanding and accepting you as you are right now, and creating a safe space where you can figure out where you want to go from here. We’ll work together as you get ready to make the sometimes tough (and rewarding) changes that will give you a better life. As a therapist, I am guided by intuition as well as research, as reflected in my books "Eco-Anxiety and Pandemic Distress," "Eco-Anxiety and Planetary Hope," and "Transgender India."

Do you feel lost, questioning who you are or where you're going with no easy answers? Sometimes life takes an unexpected turn, we hit a bottom, or we just realize that something in us is different...or something must change. Such times of confusion and crisis are often the meeting point for our work together. They are also openings to self-discovery and real change. I listen deeply for what you want, develop a relationship of trust, and work WITH you to establish the clarity and direction you need.

People come to therapy with unique needs, concerns, and life circumstances. Through the process of self-inquiry, I help clients gain insight and develop effective coping skills to move through a challenge with greater ease and understanding. My therapeutic style is warm, compassionate and curious about one's experience. I use an attachment based, person-centered approach that offers individuals and couples clarity around repetitive patterns that cause pain, conflict, and limit growth.

After being a therapist for over 20 years, I have learned that each person is unique. I can help you foster that aspect of yourself and grow to be your authentic self and make decisions that support your best interest and growth. By clearing the path, relieving you from your pains and wounds, detaching you from the stories that harm you and are not true, you can make the decisions that will empower you to live your life in the way that brings you the most pleasure and happiness. After years of experience and healing my own wounds, I have found that talk therapy alone may not suffice. That is why I specialize IFS and EMDR.

Welcome. I work with children, adolescents, and adults coping with relational, attachment, and anxiety disorders. In my practice, therapy often entails exploring the impact of early attachment experiences on our views of self and our ability to form close, meaningful relationships throughout life. In our work together, you will be treated with warmth, empathy, and openness. The most important part of our work is the development of a trusting relationship. This relationship creates a thoughtful, safe space to explore your strengths, challenges, and goals. My approach to clinical work is largely relational and psychodynamic.

As your therapist, I will help you address the challenges that are holding you back from creating the life you want. Many times this involves simple, guided questions that explore how you came to feel the way you feel and why you do the things you do. I utilize a relational framework when working with adults and older teens. Research has shown that the most important aspect of therapy is the relationship you have with your therapist. The modalities change over time, but the need to experience trust in examining your inner landscape is essential and unwavering.

I love what I do! I have the pleasure of working with clients from five to 105-years-old! Having the opportunity to work with an expansive age range has taught me that at any age: we want to be loved and we want to love, we want to belong, we want to have purpose, we want to experience joy, and we don't want pain. My goal as a therapist, is to help my clients find ways to reduce, restructure, and remove obstacles that cause pain; while building on our individual resources to promote health, happiness and well-being.

Starting therapy can be scary, exciting, and bring up feelings of uncertainty. You may feel alone, stuck, have difficulty expressing your thoughts/feelings, and not know who to share these intimate and vulnerable thoughts/feelings with. An important part of having a positive therapy experience is a warm, trusting, and open therapeutic relationship. My aim is to provide this positive experience and support your overall well-being. I also speak Cantonese (廣東話) with native fluency and have experience in providing psychotherapy and parent support in Cantonese.

You are so special and unique and I want you to own it! I love working with clients who are committed to deepening their relationship with their authentic self. Making a declaration of who you truly are can be scary, isolating, and confusing. I know this because I have always felt different and now I am able to see that as my superpower, it is yours as well.

I believe that the first step towards change is acceptance; therefore, I strive to create a non-judgmental space, one that views many "symptoms" as coping mechanisms that made sense at some point but have since outgrown their usefulness. When we can view ourselves with compassion, we can then challenge ourselves to examine thought and behavior patterns that may be keeping us stuck and learn to move beyond them. An important part of this work is getting in touch with our core values and finding ways to remain in alignment with them as we move towards our goals.

Have you been feeling lost, isolated, anxious, and overwhelmed? Have you been concerned about your relationships? Or perhaps your teen is struggling with anxiety, emotion regulation, school and peer difficulties. Creatives and neurodivergent clients are some of my favorite to work with, from teens struggling with changes at home or school, to adults dealing with internal blocks and recognizing their need to heal and learn new coping tools to navigate life. My clients learn new healthy coping skills, gain greater self-acceptance and self-trust and improve their sense of connection with themselves, their loved ones, and their world.

I work with a diversity of folks in my office in Alameda and virtually throughout California. In my practice, I love working with adolescents and adults of all ages. I have a special interest in working with clients who identify as LGBTQIA+ and/or queer, folks who are questioning and exploring their identities, and individuals who are going through transitions. My clinical interests include anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, sexuality and asexuality, attachment, and relationship issues. I identify as a queer, white, and Jewish woman, and I understand the ways in which our social and cultural identities impact us.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
