It can be overwhelming to struggle with interfering anxiety or OCD or see your teen experience some of these anxiety symptoms. Sometimes people only recently start to experience these feelings and for many others these feelings have been around for a while. These feelings can be distressing! Having worked extensively with adolescents, parents and young adults progressing through different developmental stages, I meet my young clients where they are. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist at Lumate Health. My orientation is grounded in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.

I specialize in treating anxiety disorders, trauma, OCD, body image issues, and ADHD.
For therapy to be effective, it is important that you feel safe to express your most vulnerable thoughts and feelings as well as be committed to putting in the work. As a therapist, I provide a compassionate, non-judgmental space where you can feel seen and heard. From that place, and employing the most effective evidence-based therapies along with integrative and holistic modalities, we work together to uncover and shift negative subconscious beliefs and blocks to create lasting change. I love helping my clients live more fulfilled and meaningful lives in alignment with their values and purpose.

It can be helpful to deal with social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, health worries, general worries, and panic.
I work primarily with people who are dealing with anxiety or depression and my primary model of treatment is Cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT). I believe that our difficulties are more often as result of how we are thinking about our problems rather than the problems themselves. CBT provides skills and tools for coping with your thoughts as well as the difficult emotions that come along with your thinking. CBT can also be helpful for procrastination or for being withdrawn. My professional work can be characterized as being active, empathetic, compassionate, energizing and motivational.

“The best things in life are on the other side of fear.” You or your teen struggle with anxiety, OCD, or trauma. You spend hours worrying and feeling anxious. You feel tense and you're in a ton of pain. You’ve tried all kinds of ways to get rid of the problem - relaxation, meditation, etc. - and nothing has worked. You’re confused, frustrated, and nearly hopeless. You don’t understand why this is happening, how to make it go away, or even what to do next.

Anxiety sucks. I get it. It can keep you stuck in an exhausting inner battle of fear and panic. Perhaps you have had a panic attack and worry about having another one. Or maybe you find yourself frequently worrying about your relationship with your partner. Obsessive thoughts might be keeping you up at night and disrupting your ability to focus at work. And you might feel frustrated or embarrassment that you can't get your anxiety under control. You might be trying to cope with your anxiety by staying busy, distracting yourself with technology, or turning to drugs or drinking. The good news is, it does not have to be this way.

I believe that the first step towards change is acceptance; therefore, I strive to create a non-judgmental space, one that views many "symptoms" as coping mechanisms that made sense at some point but have since outgrown their usefulness. When we can view ourselves with compassion, we can then challenge ourselves to examine thought and behavior patterns that may be keeping us stuck and learn to move beyond them. An important part of this work is getting in touch with our core values and finding ways to remain in alignment with them as we move towards our goals.

Starting therapy can be scary, exciting, and bring up feelings of uncertainty. You may feel alone, stuck, have difficulty expressing your thoughts/feelings, and not know who to share these intimate and vulnerable thoughts/feelings with. An important part of having a positive therapy experience is a warm, trusting, and open therapeutic relationship. My aim is to provide this positive experience and support your overall well-being. I also speak Cantonese (廣東話) with native fluency and have experience in providing psychotherapy and parent support in Cantonese.

My therapy style is both strength-based and client-oriented. I'd like to think of myself not as the person who holds all the answers, but as my clients' teammate in a journey together to understand problems and experiment with solutions. From goal setting to implementing changes and measuring progress, I enjoy a healthy balance between proactivity from my clients and facilitation from my professional experiences. In session together, we will attempt to identify relevant issues, understand significant impacts, and cultivate realistic ways to foster success.

My professional career started in 2004 and I continue to love helping people progress to their goals. I have a holistic approach to health and wellness. Therapeutically speaking, my primary modalities include Cognitive Behavioral, Solutions Focused, and Strengths-based therapies; however, I believe every person and circumstance should be individualized based on the client's wants and needs. I like to meet people where they are and draw off of their strengths to guide them in improving their circumstances and overall quality of life.

Are you struggling to find peace, happiness, greater satisfaction, and healthier relationships? Do you continue to feel empty, angry, sad, or anxious? Do you feel as if you have limited ability to change? Self-knowledge is the key to understanding why you continue to struggle and how you can change the continuous negative cycle into a positive one. Through the process of psychotherapy, you will discover how your internal world interprets and affects your external world and how these mechanisms were developed. I can help you gain the insight and self-knowledge necessary for positive, lasting change.

Over the last 18 years, I've worked with a diverse group of child, teenage, and adult clients (individuals and couples) across a wide range of settings, both inpatient and outpatient. I use a client-directed approach, where you and I collaborate to determine what the therapy process will look like, rather than the therapist taking the "expert role" on your life. Some of the problems I most often help people with are depression, insomnia, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, ADHD, grief & trauma, and adjustment to life's stressors and changes. I am taking new clients in-person at my office in Alameda.

At East Bay Center for Anxiety Relief, we work with adults, children, teens, couples, and families. We also facilitate periodic groups focused on communication skills, social skills, anxiety, depression, and working women. We strive for mindful, efficient, and effective therapy. Our clinicians are trained in research-based models such as TEAM-CBT, ACT and Gottman couples/family models. We work a bit differently than more traditional practices. We don’t cram an hour of therapy into 50 minutes. Instead, we provide full 60-, 75-, or 90-minute sessions.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
