We all have an inherent need to make sense of our lives. Psychotherapy addresses this by becoming aware of our unconscious (unaware) patterns. Freud coined the term "repetition compulsion" by which we can unknowingly repeat past experiences. In essence, we want to change but cling to what's familiar. Long-term psychotherapy is my preference as it provides the necessary time and safety for these dynamics to emerge and therefore create freedom if desired.
I primarily practice as a psychodynamic psychotherapist. Those who wish to more fully understand themselves psychologically benefit from this approach as opposed to merely reducing symptoms. This process places great emphasis on the relationship to self and others as well as with the therapist.
I also have a great deal of experience in outpatient/inpatient settings as well as supervising other psychotherapists and managing within mental health agencies.
