I focus on three dimensions in my psychotherapeutic work. The first is awareness and insight into our development as individuals and how this development has shaped our current functioning. There are no perfect parents nor perfect family experience without unmet needs and injuries (purposeful or unintentional). In understanding what we had to do to maintain critical attachments and equally critical separation and autonomy growing up, we discover that who we are is not fixed and irrevocable. We begin to see that we now have a choice to see ourselves and the world in new healthier ways and function differently in our current life.
The second dimension I focus on is the integration of painful feelings that had to be suppressed in order to again maintain both critical attachments and healthy separation as children. When this happens these disavowed feelings can never be healed and can lead to psychological and psychophysiological symptoms. We lose out on the fullness of our being human.
Dimension three is experiential learning. As we acquire insight into our development and begin to heal and integrate the painful feelings from that experience we can now begin to experiment with new behaviors in the world and learn that our current world is not the family we grew up in. Experiential learning is necessary to galvanize the change we desire.
